Or maybe the poor kids could justify the cost of their loans by helping out around the place a bit. Bring the fee paying students their breakfast, clean the rooms, serve at dinner. That kind of thing?

There might be some good things that come about through this scheme, but yeah, it doesn't look that promising.

I actually think that Oxford is likely to be less affected than some other universities: they care too much about their academic reputation to damage it taking on extra students which it's not clear will even make money for the university (estimated cost to university of each undergrad is £16,000/year). But overall this proposal is just rubbish even for this government: the potential benefits seem tiny compared to the potential damage done to public trust in the system.

This seems like such an implausible idea that my first thought was that it had been put out there for Lib Dems to shoot down and convince themselves/the public they were having an impact within the coalition. Am I cynical?

Yes, but it's funny (and there might be some truth in it).

Note that it would serve double duty by also assuring the right-wing Tories that the government was trying to implement the kind of policies they wanted, really.
