It's because there are Evil Men In Suits With Unlimited Power pulling strings behind the scenes. I'm eagerly awaiting someone telling our heroes 'You have no idea what you're dealing with!' I mean, it has to come, right?

Doesn't wash with me. No western government with 50 plus years of liberalism since the end of WW2 is going to turn over power to a faceless fascist body. The show makes no mention of the UN, the European Human Rights Conventions and every single citizen worldwide with a brain who would oppose this. It's just unbelievable balony. I don't mind suspending my sense of disbelieve for sci-fi/fantasy but not when the world as we know it is written as something it isn't.

I think someone mentioned the UN...

Anyway, this is RTD, who shares a large portion of his brain with Joss. 'These things happen when you're on a Hellmouth', remember?

I think RTD is over-rated. He was brilliant when he wrote Queer as Folk but his time at Dr Who hasn't floated my boat. I've always found Torchwood to be mediocre and, unfortunately, even having Jane Espenson on board hasn't made this series particularly well written. Dr Pratt's (the CIA guy will always be Dr Pratt to me *ER fan, no appologies*) dialogue is incredibly naff.

If you compare the quality of this show to - say another UK sci-fi show - Misfits, it fails in everything including originality.

I was too bored to be offended.

Best comment ever. I have to record it and watch it in the morning with breakfast as I'd never stay awake long enough in the evening to see it to the end.

I never got past the first episode. It was okay, but it didn't get me excited enough to look for more. Torchwood as a whole has been disappointing for me. The early episodes of the second season were so promising, but then it just seem to keep letting me down.

Same here. I've watched it all but without much enthusiasm.

"As the riots of this week in the UK have shown, given big events unfolding rapidly, the government hasn't been able to organise a piss up in a brewery" - hey, a silver lining! Suddenly I'm really glad for the generally inadequacies of the State. ;)

Plus the chav population seems to be chronically short on the concept of authority. Those facist pharmaceutical companies will stand no chance.
