I've always liked the idea of hormones affecting the taste of blood. (In fact, at one point when I was considering writing a vamp fic, I was going to have a character who specifically avoided female victims because he disliked the flavour of estrogen.) It makes perfect sense that synthetic blood would be super bland in comparison as well.

I have to agree that it's pretty monstrous for a man to sell his own children to a vampire clan in exchange for his own immortality. But I can understand the attachment of an illegitimate son feeling grateful that his father "loved" him enough to bring him along. Curious about his half-brother and what's up there.

You know that is a good idea. (Especially for a Yaoi fic). Both genders have testosterone and oestrogen, but the levels are without a doubt different enough to play an effect. (For the first time today I've learnt that we British add that 'o' onto estrogen, all thanks to my spell checker!)

I think for a man as bad as the king, he wasn't so much showing love for his illegitimate children, but getting one over the vampire who claimed the life of his kid. He probably changed them, only to protect his advantage, but Koichi and his brother don't think of it like that. Like you said, Koichi feels legitimised by the process, worthy of the prestige he now has. I never put an age on him, but he's definitely from a time when being illegitimate meant you were also considered to be untrustworthy, unfaithful, bad as how could a child born in sin be good? (That's honestly what they used to believe.)

Sadly, that mindset against illegitimate kids isn't as gone as we'd like it to be. So many children of single parents or of "the mistress" are still thought of as second-class.

(I've seen it spelled "oestrogen" before, but it looks rather odd.)

Honestly, I haven't really seen this happen in the UK. Perhaps it does, but it's not something I'm aware of. However when my parents got divorced my Mum used to wear her wedding ring on holiday, because she was scared of being judged. I guess from my perspective I wouldn't really know. And divorced parents aren't the same as unmarried parents.

Great chapter! I think hormones do affect blood XD but you would have to be a vampire to know their different tastes...

I wonder if a human could taste the difference. For most people the only blood they've ever tasted, outside meat, is their own. Same with blood types, I know A and B represent different sugars attached to the blood, but not if you can taste them...... This is an experiment I don't think any human should ever try. The diseases that effect humans tend to be common among humans, for some reason.

Well humans are not meant to drink blood and can develop serious allergies and other conditions when doing so XD I've never tasted anyone else's blood but mine and it's kinda metallic and salty so it's always confusing when someone says blood can taste sweet. Again I guess only a vampire would be able to taste things like hormones. Hormones can have different smell so I guess they taste differently as well.

The taste of blood is terrible in larger amounts. When I had braces as a kid I had four teeth pulled out, and one of them bled into my mouth for awhile before it healed up. The taste of that much blood, which couldn't really be that much, was almost to much for me. I think when you suck a cut finger you're also tasting your own sweat and whatever else is on your hand at the time. For peace of mind, let's just say whatever good you'd been eating/preparing.

.... I sound like a psychopath don't I? Does it help that before I was vegetarian I could only ever eat my steak well done? I considered any pink parts as "uncooked", and it tastes disgusting.
