Summary: Kim Jaejoong is on the run from his crazed ex-husband and Lieutenant Jung Yunho is the only one standing between him and an uncertain fate. Will Yunho be his savior...or will his rescue come too late?
Yunho checked in with the officer on shift outside of Jaejoong’s house before slowly making his way up the walk to the open front door.
A stream of kids came racing out the door and he laughed as he hopped aside to clear the way for them.
As he stepped inside, he could hear an adult yelling at the kids to behave themselves but knew that it wasn’t Jaejoong. Firstly, because the voice was feminine and secondly, because Jaejoong didn’t yell. He couldn’t remember ever hearing Jaejoong raise his voice.
“Minho, you come back here or else I’ll…”
A pretty, petite woman stopped dead in her tracks when she saw him standing in the doorway, a hand immediately drifting up to her hair to do a quick check.
Grinning, he walked towards her. “Hello.”
“H-hi.”
He held out his hand in greeting. “Yunho. Jung Yunho.”
“Ah, yes, Yunho. Jaejoong’s…friend.” She blushed as she realized how it sounded and hurried on. “I’m Sunny, nice to meet you. Jaejoong’s just back there, in the kitchen.”
“Thanks.”
Yunho flashed another grin as he passed her, chuckling to himself when he heard her sigh softly behind him.
There was a sort of organized chaos in the kitchen. It was noisy, as there were more kids there, but they were seated at the table - twitching in their seats more like it - as they watched Jaejoong whip up some concoction with fascinated expressions on their faces.
“Your dad is such a good cook,” a little boy said.
Maya, who looked pretty in pink, nodded, beaming at her father.
“My dad can’t cook,” another little girl said. “Mom always yells at him to stay out of her kitchen because all he ever does is burn stuff. I don’t think he minds. He says that way he can watch sports in peace.”
The kids around the table snickered.
Just then, Jaejoong looked up and their eyes met. Was it him or did the world stop turning for a second or two?
“Hi,” Jaejoong said softly.
“Hi.”
Turning to see who her father was speaking to, Maya jumped off her chair and raced to his side.
“Mr. Yunho!”
Yunho bent and swooped her up. “Hello, birthday girl. You’re looking very lovely today.”
Maya blushed, a trait that reminded him of her father.
“Have you been having a good day?”
She simply nodded, suddenly feeling shy.
“Did you get lots of presents?”
She nodded again.
“Maya…” Jaejoong spoke up. “Don’t forget to thank Mr. Yunho for your gift.”
“Thank you, Mr. Yunho,” she murmured.
“Can I get a kiss?” he teased.
Her blush deepened but she nodded, pressing a kiss to his cheek before wriggling to get out of his arms. Laughing, he set her down and watched as she rejoined her friends before making his way over to her father.
“Quite a houseful you’ve got here,” he commented offhandedly.
“Tell me about it,” Jaejoong muttered, finishing up the ice-cream sundaes he’d been putting together. “It was just supposed to be Sunny’s kids, the kids next to her, the family next to them and the ones on the other side of me, as she put it, but somehow all the parents on the street got wind and decided to dump their little monsters on my doorstep for a few hours.”
Yunho laughed. “You’re loving it.”
Jaejoong grunted. “Maya’s happy, that’s all that matters.” He glanced over at Yunho. “Thanks again for the gift. You should’ve seen her face when she opened it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her quite so happy.”
“I should be thanking you,” Yunho corrected, gently nudging Jaejoong in the side. “You basically let me hijack your gift.”
Jaejoong shrugged. “It’s nothing.”
Jaejoong thought back to the day that he had come into the city to shop for Maya’s present. Yunho had met him so that they could have lunch together, some time for just the two of them, and after an enjoyable meal, they’d walked through the mall, eventually arriving at Jaejoong’s destination to purchase the purple elephant that he’d earmarked the month before. When Yunho had voiced his desire to buy something as well, Jaejoong had been a little surprised, and very touched. He knew how much Maya would love the elephant and for some reason, deep inside where he refused to acknowledge it, he wanted Maya to like Yunho, though he knew that she already did, so he suggested that Yunho buy the elephant for her instead. Yunho had hesitated, not wanting to steal his gift, but after he’d assured him that there were other things Maya would love just as equally, Yunho bought it, had it gift wrapped and gave it to Jaejoong to keep until Maya’s birthday, just in case he couldn’t make it on the day itself.
“Still, I really appreciate it,” Yunho said. “What did you end up getting her?”
“I asked her what she wanted and at first she said nothing but after some prodding, she told me she wanted new books. She loves fairytales, princesses especially, so I also bought her that tiara that she’s wearing. She hasn’t taken it off all day. You should’ve seen the look on her face when I put it on her. It makes me realize just how deprived she’s been, not having the sort of experiences that other little girls take for granted.”
He paused as guilt tore through him, only continuing when Yunho lay a comforting hand over his.
“I gave her a little mp3 player filled with classical songs. She’s always liked those, ever since she was a baby. Daniel used to play the violin and…” He trailed off, shaking the thought away. “Anyway, I’m just glad she’s having fun. She deserves it.”
“You did a great job,” Yunho said gently.
Jaejoong flashed a slight smile. “Thanks.” Sprinkling grated chocolate curls on the row of sundaes in front of him, he called to the kids, “Alright, come and get it.”
There was a flurry of activity as they all jumped up at once and raced to the counter to be served.
For the next hour, Yunho watched the kids play with each other, talked to the few adults in attendance and stuffed his face with pizza, cake and ice cream. The highlight for him was when Maya declared him her Mr. Yunho after one of the other little girls sought his attention for too long. She waltzed on over, took his hand, told the little girl in no uncertain terms to find her own friend, and dragged him away. Quiet though she might be most of the time, she clearly had spunk. Besides making him laugh, he was beyond touched, so much so that he’d spontaneously hugged her and found that he didn’t want to let go. And she didn’t try to get out of his hold either. Instead, she’d put her arms around his neck, laid her cheek on his shoulder and patted his back. It was such a soothing, comforting feeling. He actually felt, well, loved.
Finally, the party was done and the kids were all gone. Sunny had sent her brood off with her husband and stayed behind to help Jaejoong clean up some of the mess. And to eavesdrop, Yunho suspected. For that reason, he spoke to her very casually, even flirtatiously, laughing inwardly every time color flared in her cheeks. He all but ignored Jaejoong so that she wouldn’t have anything to read into. Eventually, she said a somewhat reluctant goodbye and Yunho closed and locked the door behind her.
“What an evening,” he said as he walked back into the kitchen.
“Be grateful that you only got here when things were winding down. They’re much worse when they’re fresh.”
Yunho laughed, then turned to Maya. “Did you have fun, Maya?”
She smiled and nodded but didn’t look up as she continued to color in her coloring book.
“That’s good.”
“Why are kids so messy?” Jaejoong grumbled.
“You could always leave it until morning,” Yunho suggested.
“I’d rather not. After I go to bed, pass out for a few hours and forget the torment I endured today, this is not what I want to wake up to.”
Yunho chuckled, the sound drifting off into the silence that followed.
After several minutes of nothing but the sound of water as Jaejoong washed the dishes, Yunho cleared his throat and said, “Well… I’d better get going.”
Jaejoong’s expression fell. “Oh…okay.”
He didn’t know why but he really didn’t want Yunho to go. He had an overwhelming urge to ask him to stay, even if just for a few more hours.
What do you have to lose?
“You can stay…” he blurted. “…if you want.”
There was no way that Yunho could mistake it for anything but what it was: an invitation to spend the night. Did he want to stay? To spend the night with Jaejoong? To touch, hold, taste him again?
Hell…
“…yes.” He cleared his throat again and tried again. “I’d love to.”
Jaejoong nodded. “Just let me finish up here, then I’ll give Maya a bath.”
“I can do it…if you don’t mind.”
Jaejoong froze, eyes widening slightly.
Yunho? Give Maya a bath? From the very first day that he’d taken her home, he’d given her every single bath she’d ever had. In the beginning, Daniel had been there and it was a family chore, bathing their baby and putting her to bed. In later years, however, it had been all him, especially now that it was just the two of them. The thought never crossed his mind that Yunho would even want to give Maya a bath but now that he was faced with the question, and after inviting the man into his house for the night, into his bed, he realized that if Yunho was going to really be a part of their lives then he would have to start sharing Maya with him. She was the most important thing in his life and if Yunho really wanted to develop whatever it was between them then a relationship with Maya was a must. They’d already started off well enough on their own, now it was his turn to show them both, in his own way, that they had his approval to care for one another and that Yunho and Jaejoong were close enough that something as intimate as a bath was okay.
His gaze dropped to his daughter. “Maya? Do you want Mr. Yunho to give you your bath tonight?”
Her chubby cheeks flushed bright pink but she didn’t look up. She simply nodded again.
Jaejoong laughed nervously. “I guess that’s your answer.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve done this lots of times. I have two sisters and they’ve had me giving their kids baths since they were babies. I’ve had a lot of practice,” Yunho said with a smile. “I’m just going to alert the officer outside that I’ll be staying. I’ll be right back.”
Jaejoong blushed furiously. Was that necessary? Did everyone need to know that they were going to sleep together?
Sighing, he picked up the speed of his soaping and rinsing. For once he could actually look forward to going to bed.
Yunho ignored the officer’s shocked reaction when he told him that he would be spending the night and gave him his orders for the rest of his shift.
He knew that within a couple of hours word would have made its way around the station that he had blatantly spent the night with Jaejoong but he was off the clock and what he did in his free time was his own business. If his uncle wanted to give him grief for breaking some ethical code during an ongoing investigation, he could knock himself out.
He locked the front door behind him and set the alarm, checking all the ground-floor windows and the entrance in the back to make sure that everything was secure.
He hadn’t told Jaejoong that they’d found Daniel’s place and he decided then and there that it could keep until morning. Daniel would undoubtedly be pissed and for that reason he was glad that he was staying. If Daniel was stupid enough to show up, at least he’d be there to handle it personally.
“Ready?” he asked as he walked back into the kitchen.
Maya and Jaejoong were just where he’d left them.
“Maya. Go with Mr. Yunho. I’ll be up soon.”
Maya dutifully set her coloring pencil aside, slid off the chair and walked over to Yunho, taking the hand that he held out to her.
Jaejoong watched them go, unable to ignore the anxious feeling that had settled in his chest.
He trusted Yunho inexplicably, knew that the man would lay down his life for them, so why was he so nervous? Yunho wasn’t a pervert, a child-molester. He knew that he didn’t have to worry about anything like that. It was just his natural instinct, he supposed. Maybe a little jealousy intermingled with it. Maya was his but the closer she got to Yunho, the more she would become theirs. Could he ever share her with someone else?
Sighing, he set the wash cloth down in its bowl and turned off the tap. The rest of the dishes could wait until morning.
He turned off the lights as he made his way through the rooms to the staircase, taking his time as he walked up. He paused just outside of the bathroom and watched his two favourite people in the world.
Maya was laughing and saying nonsensical things as Yunho playfully scooped soapsuds and piled them onto her head.
“All hail Princess Maya of the soap,” he teased, gently scrubbing her back with a wash-cloth.
Maya giggled, palming a tiny amount of suds and adding them to what was already on her head.
Realizing that his worries were for naught, Jaejoong continued down the hallway to his bedroom. He stripped, dumped his clothes in the dirty basket and strolled into the adjoining bath. He had a hot shower, soaping quickly but taking his time as he rinsed, allowing the heat to permeate his weary bones. He was really tired. It wasn’t going to stop him from making love with Yunho, if he still wanted to, but he would probably fall asleep really quickly after. Not necessarily a bad thing, and definitely a good way to end what had been an enjoyable but trying day.
Shutting off the water, he toweled off and slipped into a simple pajama vest and pants combo. He walked back into his bedroom, opened his draw and fished out something for Yunho. He tried to find the biggest T-shirt and longest sweats that he could since Yunho was a couple of inches taller than he and broader across the chest. He laid the clothes on the bed, then walked through the adjoining door that led to Maya’s room just as Yunho was tucking her into bed.
“Goodnight, Maya,” Yunho was saying.
“Goodnight, Yunho,” she replied drowsily.
Jaejoong’s eyebrows shot up. Somewhere during the last half hour Yunho had gone from “Mr.” to simply Yunho. He wasn’t sure how he felt about that.
Clearing his throat, he said, “I laid out some clothes for you to change into. I hope they fit.”
Yunho rose from where he sat on the edge of Maya’s bed and turned to face him. “Okay.” He bent to place a soft kiss on Maya’s forehead then walked around Jaejoong and disappeared into his bedroom.
Jaejoong sat in the same spot that Yunho had just vacated, tucking the covers tighter around Maya and smoothing her brow. Most nights he would spend ten to fifteen minutes just looking at her, gently stroking her cheeks, her hair. She was the one good thing in his life, the one thing he was sure that he had done absolutely right. No matter how bad things had been, how bad they could still become, he would never, ever regret making her his.
Leaning forward, he kissed her cheek, her forehead, then laid his own against hers for a few seconds. Finally, he rose, dimmed her lamp and strode back into his bedroom. He usually didn’t close or lock the door but he’d never had an overnight guest before. He didn’t want to risk Maya walking in on them so he made an exception this one night.
Yunho was still in the shower so he climbed into bed and snuggled beneath the covers.
He was nervous again but for an entirely different reason this time. The memory of the last night he’d spent with Yunho came rushing back, and along with it the smells, sensations and emotions he’d experienced. He immediately felt himself thicken.
So much for fatigue.
He was covered up to his nose when Yunho finally emerged from the bathroom clad in the clothes he’d laid out. The T-shirt fit him snugly, accentuating his sizeable chest, and the pants were an inch too short but he looked good, young and fit and very attractive, especially with the way his damp hair curled about his ears and forehead.
He stayed still while Yunho climbed in beside him but so soon as he reached for him, he became pliant, immediately arching his neck to meet Yunho’s hot, seeking mouth.
The kiss was languid, drugging, a slick, slow, glide of lips and tongues. There was no urgency in it. Yunho planned on taking his time, on savoring. The last time they were together, a whirlwind of desire and emotion had taken hold of him, them, and he’d been lost to its power. Every time they’d come together, it had been frantic, almost like their lives depended on it. This time, he was in control and he intended to pace himself. He’d realized later on, after their last coupling, that he’d overwhelmed Jaejoong and hadn’t given him much of a chance to fully participate in their lovemaking. He’d seen to his pleasure time and time again but there was more to pleasure than orgasm and he felt somewhat remorseful that he’d robbed Jaejoong - and himself - of that.
With that in mind, he tore his lips away and kissed his way down Jaejoong’s neck to his chest, closing his mouth over the slight peak and sucking it through the thin material of his vest.
Jaejoong gasped, biting back a groan as the heat and moisture around his nipple sent waves of pleasure throughout his body. He almost groaned again, this time in disappointment when Yunho moved his mouth, but his would-be groan quickly turned into a delighted gasp when that hot cavern closed around his other nipple.
Yunho teased Jaejoong, going back and forth between the turgid tips. He knew that Jaejoong was incredibly turned on. Besides his moans and soft whimpers, his erection was hard and thick against Yunho’s lower stomach. He was sorely tempted to go directly to the root of Jaejoong’s pleasure and “attack” it head on but he wouldn’t be able to restrain himself when he got there so he delayed it, instead pushing Jaejoong’s t-shirt up to his neck to tongue the sensitive buds directly.
“Do you like that?” he asked between licks.
He caught Jaejoong’s nipple between his teeth and tugged it gently. Jaejoong gasped again, unconsciously rolling his hips into Yunho, which made the answer to Yunho’s question obvious, but Yunho wanted to hear the words directly from him. Reaching up to the free nipple, he tweaked it between his fingers and repeated his question.
“Do you?”
Jaejoong nodded, his tongue sneaking out to wet his dry lips.
“Say it,” Yunho ordered.
He heard a soft sigh, then a barely audible, “Yes.”
Jaejoong’s voice was breathy, which Yunho found incredibly sexy. His body seemed to agree as his already throbbing erection hardened further.
Down boy, he mentally mso-ansi-language:EN-GB">chastised himself.
It would be so easy to give into the passion that pulled at him, the need for urgency and immediate satisfaction. It wouldn’t take him more than five seconds to strip them both and bury himself deep inside of Jaejoong’s tight heat. But he wasn’t a rutting animal. He wasn’t looking for a hole to fuck and he sure as hell wasn’t driven by the need to procreate. His passion was fuelled by his immeasurable attraction to and desire for this man, only a small part of which was sexual. As much as he wanted Jaejoong’s body, he craved all of him a lot more. They needed to have that conversation and by God they would, he swore, but for now the only way he could show Jaejoong how much he cared for and needed him was with his body so he had to take it slow.
He was so caught up in his thoughts that it took him a while to notice that Jaejoong was touching him, one hand having drifted beneath the T-shirt he wore and splayed on his back while the other clutched restlessly at his hair.
He raised his head and looked at Jaejoong’s face, his breath catching in his throat at the intensity of the lust beaming out at him from his dark eyes. This was what he’d missed last time, he realized. He’d been so focused on doing that he hadn’t taken the time to really see how his efforts were being received.
Jaejoong’s hands tugged at the hem of his shirt and he helped him slip it over his head, removing Jaejoong’s vest so that they were both naked from the waist up, bare skin to bare skin as he captured Jaejoong’s lips for another searing kiss.
