Title: Fate (Mirotic) Jin & Leo's Sidestory
Pairing: Jingyoung/Leo (imaginary characters)
Rating: PG-13
Summary: After Jaejoong and Yunho's story ends, theirs begins.

“There you are.”

Jinyoung tipped his head back and watched the giant close the sliding glass door before approaching him.

“You’re back,” he murmured.

Leo nodded, smiling. “Yeah. Just got in.”

Jin resumed staring out at the city lights from his perch on the lounger, taking a swig of his beer. “How was it?”

Leo shrugged, leaning a hip against the balcony’s railing as he looked down at his leader. “Okay, I guess. It was just the first script-reading. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited, though. My first musical… who would’ve thunk it?” He chuckled softly.

Jin smiled absently. “It was bound to happen. You’re amazing and talent like that could never stay unnoticed.”

Leo flushed slightly but Jin didn’t notice. He was still staring out at the city.

“What are the others up to?” Jin asked.

“Uh…Yuki and Kaze are at it again. We’re probably going to need a new game console by the end of the night at the rate they’re going. I think Ran stepped out to get something to eat.”

“And…” He didn’t need to say the name. They both knew who he meant.

Leo’s jaw clenched, his earlier levity dissipating. “He’s on the phone, having his nightly conversation with his boyfriend. The usual.”

The words stung but Jin accepted it, was used to it. He nodded and took another swig of beer. “Cool.”

“When are you going to stop doing this to yourself?” Leo asked, suddenly feeling weary and fed up of the situation.

Jin glanced over at him. “What do you mean?”

“You know very well what I’m talking about,” Leo accused. “It’s been a year and a half since our début, a year and a half since they’ve been together, inseparable, yet you can’t let him go. Or won’t. You numb your pain with alcohol but it’s not working, and it never will, yet you still won’t let him go. Do you hate yourself that much? Are you some kind of masochist?”

Slowly, Jin placed his bottle on the table and stood. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Leo scoffed. “Of course I do, everyone knows. We’ve always known. You’ve been panting after him for years but he’s never once looked at you the way he looks at Yunho. Not once. He’s never going to love you. It’s time for you to accept that, really accept it, and let it go. Let him go.”

Jin’s hands curled into fists. “This has nothing to do with you.”

“It has everything to do with me, with all of us. Do you think it’s easy for us to see you like this? Looking like you’re dying inside, only living half-heartedly? Especially when you don’t have to. Especially since what you want…” Leo stopped himself from saying too much, knowing that once the words were out he could never take them back.

“What I want what? Go on, finish it,” Jin goaded.

“Especially since what you want has been staring you in the face all this time but you’ve been too fucking blind to see it!” he snapped.

Jin’s head whipped back as if he’d been slapped. “What…?”

Before either one knew what was happening, Leo had crossed the distance between them, cupped Jin’s chin roughly and pressed his lips to the startled boy’s. Jin’s gasp gave him entry and he took it, deepening the kiss.

Jin’s mind eventually kicked in enough for him to push Leo away. “What…what the hell was that?” he sputtered.

Leo passed a frustrated hand through his hair. “I swear I don’t know why I love you sometimes. I must be out of my fucking mind.” With that, he stalked to the door and threw it back so hard that it slid along the track and slammed when it reached the end as he walked through the frame.

Jin continued to stand there dumbfounded, wondering if his mind was playing tricks on him.

Leo…his best friend since kindergarten…had kissed him. Kissed him. Why would…

There’s someone out there for you, maybe even closer than you think.

Jaejoong had spoken those words to him a year ago and like everything else he’d said on that beach, Jin had not forgotten. Was this what he’d meant?, he wondered. Had he known about Leo?

He gasped.

Was Leo in love with him?

“Shit,” he swore, turning and running into the apartment.

When he came upon Yuki and Kaze in the living room, he stopped. “Did you see where Leo went?”

“No,” Kaze grunted, growling when his character took a hit. “Go away!”

“Out, I think,” Yuki replied, not taking his eyes off the television.

Jin raced to the room he shared with Leo - irony of ironies, he realized belatedly - but he wasn’t there either. He was just on his way out the door when it opened.

“Hey…” Ran began but hurriedly stepped aside when his leader pushed past him.

Jin took the stairs instead of the elevator, brain racing furiously as he tried to think of where Leo would possibly go. As he hit the sidewalk, he decided to check the places they usually visited that were in close proximity to the apartment building. After twenty minutes, however, he still hadn’t found his friend. He didn’t have his phone so he couldn’t call the boy, or anyone else, to ask for his location. He was just considering giving up, telling himself that he could wait until Leo returned, when he remembered.

Changing direction, he sped off to the park a couple of blocks away from the apartment. It reminded Leo of a park in their hometown and whenever he was homesick or needed to clear his head, he would go there and sit on the swings.

Jin slowed his pace when he saw him, not wanting to startle the boy. He sat on a swing, gently rocking back and forth, head bowed dejectedly. The swings were made for kids half his height and size but somehow, he looked like a lost little boy to Jin.

Jin dropped into the swing beside him, not saying a word for several minutes.

Eventually, he cleared his throat. “How long…” He blushed. This was going to be such a strange conversation.

“How long…? How long have I been gay?” Leo asked, not lifting his head.

It wasn’t the question he’d meant but it was one he’d intended to ask anyway. “Yeah…”

“Mmm… Twenty-three years I guess. How long since I’ve admitted it to myself, though?” Leo leaned back, looking up at the night sky. “When I realized that I couldn’t pretend to be straight anymore. No, when I realized that I didn’t want to. Love can do that to you, I suppose. It makes you have all kinds of epiphanies.” He smiled wryly.

Jin’s eyes widened as he absorbed his words. Had Leo loved him that long? No…it was impossible.

“Is that why you and your girlfriend broke up in uni? Because you were…” He couldn’t say the word. He still couldn’t say it about himself, he still wasn’t sure if he knew exactly what it meant, so it was even more impossible for him to attribute it to his friend.

Leo laughed. “No. She cheated on me. Repeatedly. And I didn’t care. I think that’s why she continued cheating, to get my attention, but when she realized that I knew and I did nothing, never confronted her or fought for her…” He shrugged. “We were a bad fit anyway.”

Jin nodded. “Okay.”

“But that’s not what you were asking, is it?” Leo asked, smiling knowingly. “I can’t say exactly when I realized that I was in love with you. Let’s just say it’s been a while.”

Jin gulped. “Why didn’t you ever say anything?”

Leo cocked a brow. “Because constantly declaring your love for Jaejoong worked out so well for you, right?”

Jin winced. He deserved it. “Point taken.”

Leo immediately regretted his words so he clarified, “I don’t mean to hurt you but…you know how it feels to love someone, want them, and have them not see you or return your feelings. It wouldn’t have mattered if I’d told you. You only had eyes for one person and it wasn’t me. I accepted that it was never going to be me so…” He shrugged. “I kept it to myself.”

“You still should have told me,” Jin grumbled, staring down at his feet.

Leo scoffed. “Why? So you could reject me? Quite nicely, I’m sure, but it would have been rejection all the same.”

Jin sat up straight, eyes narrowing as he looked over at his friend. “Like you said, I know how it feels to love someone who can’t accept your feelings. I also know how it feels to love someone, wanting a chance, just the chance, to prove to them and yourself what you know: that you can make them happy. I know what it’s like to never get that chance. So yes, I may have been shocked at first but once I got over that…” His cheeks flamed hotly. “Love isn’t something that we can just throw away simply because it comes in an unexpected package. Besides… Jaejoong kind of told me a year ago, it just didn’t click until just now on the balcony.”

Leo’s eyes widened in surprise. “Jaejoong?”

Jin smiled. “I guess if anyone would know, it would be him. And not just because he’s gay. Before we returned from our vacation, he…accepted my feelings. He apologized for not acknowledging me sooner and I’d thought that that would be enough. All I wanted was for him to admit that what I felt for him was real but… As it turns out, it wasn’t that simple. But I guess just like he came to realize my feelings, perhaps he saw yours as well.”

Leo nodded. It made sense.

They lapsed into silence for several minutes, both processing the revelations of the night.

“So where do we go from here?” Jin eventually asked.

Leo shrugged. “I don’t know. Nowhere. Your knowing how I feel doesn’t change the fact that you don’t return my feelings. And not only that, you’re still in love with Jaejoong.”

Jin chuckled softly. “I don’t know about that.”

Leo glanced over at him curiously.

“I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. A part of me will always love him, we never forget our first love and he’s not only that, he’s also a professional colleague and a close dongsaeng. But…I don’t think I’ve been holding onto him so much so because I love him but because he’s the closest I have to having someone. I know it’s stupid but…” He blushed. “Our lifestyle doesn’t allow us to casually date or meet a lot of people. The only people we see on a daily basis are other celebrities, company staff and fans. Staff and fans are off limits for obvious reasons but other celebs aren’t much of an option either because even if our company allows us to date, theirs may not. Added to that, even if we were lucky enough to connect with one and begin a relationship, conflicting schedules are the number one reason why celebrity relationships ultimately end. It’s all very disheartening, to be honest. Jaejoong is always there. I see him every day, talk to him every day. I don’t have to worry about being seen with him. Even if our relationship isn’t what it used to be, which is my fault for royally fucking it up, at least he’s there, you know? Even though I was an ass to him, even though I made him uncomfortable, he never cut me out of his life and I know that he never will.” He sighed. “God, I sound pathetic.”

“No…” Leo reached over and patted him on the knee. “No, you don’t.”

“That’s why…” Jin placed his hand on top of Leo’s, turning to look the boy in the face as he said earnestly, “I want you to give me a chance.”

Leo pulled his hand back. “Jin…”

Jin shook his head. “No, listen to me. I can’t make any promises so I won’t even try. I won’t say that in time I will return your feelings because there’s no way to know for sure. I only ask for the chance to see if I can. You’re a great guy and if I were a girl, I’m positive I would have fallen in love with you so why should it be any different if you’re a guy? I’ve accepted that I’m clearly not 100% straight since, as we all know, I would’ve done absolutely anything to make Jaejoong mine and I know that he is 100% male. Trust me on that,” he muttered beneath his breath, earning a curious look from Leo. “My point is… If we walk away from here and go back to being the way we usually are, will you stop loving me? Does my knowing affect your feelings for me in some way?”

Leo shook his head. “No.”

“Then give me a chance. Give yourself a chance. You said that I was too blind to see you. Well, the blinders are off. I’m looking right at you, Leo. Leo, my best friend who I’ve been buck nekkid with in the sauna a million times; who knows all of my most embarrassing secrets, and then some. Leo who protected me when I was too small to protect myself. Give me a chance to fall in love with you. That’s all I ask.”

Leo turned Jin’s words over in his mind. On the one hand, it wasn’t a declaration of love and he would be making himself vulnerable to incredible amounts of pain if Jin eventually realized that he couldn’t love him back. On the other hand, he knew that he’d regret it for the rest of his life if he turned him down flat. Even whilst he’d hurt, watching Jin chase after Jaejoong for so long, he’d admired Jin’s courage, his willingness to open himself to rejection for just the slimmest of chances that he would get what he’d wanted. It hadn’t worked out for Jin but at least he had the satisfaction of knowing that he’d done his best. Leo couldn’t say the same because he’s stood by and watched the boy he loved pine over another without ever telling him that he had other options.

Perhaps it was time to stop standing on the fringes and throw his hat into the ring.

He took a deep breath and released it slowly. “Okay.”

“What?” Jin asked, surprised.

Leo looked over at him and smiled. “I’ll give you, us, a chance.”

Jin gulped. “Okay, good. Great.” Where did they go from there?, he wondered. “So, uh…do we kiss again…now?” He blushed.

Leo chuckled, shaking his head. “I don’t think you’re ready for that quite yet.”

Jin nodded repeatedly. “Yes, yes, you’re probably right.” He stilled, taking another deep breath. “Can I at least hold your hand?”

Leo blushed, turning away. “Sure…”

Jin reached over and took Leo’s hand from where it lay limply on his thigh. It was weird. He was so used to holding hands much smaller and smoother than Leo’s. Even Jae’s hands were small and delicate like a girl’s. This would take some getting used to. Especially since Leo’s hand was actually bigger than his own.

He gasped. “Oh, my God… I’m the girl!”

Leo frowned. “What?”

“Look!” He held their clasped hands up between them. “Your hand is bigger than mine. The guy’s hand is always bigger than the girl’s, which means that I…I’m the girl in the relationship,” he croaked.

For a minute Leo looked at him like he’d lost his damn mind. Then he burst out laughing. Linking their fingers, he teased, “Don’t worry. Oppa will take care of you.”

Jin growled and tried to snatch his hand back but Leo only tightened his grip, chuckling.

The two fell into a companionable silence, both staring up at the twinkling stars as they thought over the events of the night.

It was undoubtedly going to take some getting used to but having been through the same experience, understanding what the other was thinking and feeling, they already had a head start.

Like the clear sky up above, the forecast looked promising.

A/N: Was supposed to do this ages ago, when I wrapped up Fate: Jae's POV but I only got around to doing it today. Better late than never!
