Up until the last 15 minutes or so of the finale, everything was making sense and playing out. But during the last 15-20 minutes, one thought was continually going through my mind, and that that was:
"What the ... ??? !!!"
Or something of that sort.
*From here on out, there are spoilers.*
Oh my, where to even begin. For lack of a better way to do this, let's just go with categories.
1: Deb.
Ok, pulling the plug I can understand. Her brain was damaged beyond repair, and the machines were keeping her alive. Deb wouldn't have wanted that kind of existence, so in that regard Dexter did the right thing. But why on Earth did he have to take her body out of the hospital and bury her at sea? Wouldn't she have wanted to be buried beside her beloved father? Or even beside Rita? Wouldn't she have wanted to give her friends and colleagues at Miami Metro (or at the very least, only Quinn and Batista) a chance to say goodbye to her? Given what happens immediately after, most people will probably come to the conclusion that Dexter took her from the hospital, but that can never actually be proven, since he seemed to have been able to just casually stroll out of a hospital in the middle of a hurricane with the body of an ex-lieutenant of Miami Metro, probably one of the most recognized faces in the city. They will, however, certainly come to the conclusion that she is dead, since there's no way that she could have been taken out of there on a respirator.
I mean I get the whole deep meaning of Deb technically being Dexter's last kill and all, but even so.... There was just no reason to take her out of the hospital once the plug was pulled.
2: Dexter's not-suicide.
I have to wonder if Dexter actually set out to commit suicide (as it would seem) or if he intended to survive and fake his own death all along. I really don't see how he could have survived. One does not simply drive a medium-sized speed boat straight into a hurricane with no life vest on and live to tell the tale. Was he rescued? Did he swim? I don't see how he could have, he was miles from land. His boat was torn to shreds, and he should have been too. Perhaps he didn't mean to survive but somehow did via one of the methods listed above, and then thought "well if THAT didn't kill me, I guess I'm just not supposed to die yet."
And what was up with the whole blue-color logger persona he adapted? Everything about it is so decidedly... un-Dexter. Are we to assume that he will go on doing this for the rest of his born days? Does he go on killing? And if so, does he throw the Code to the winds and just have fun doing it?
3: Harrison.
Even if for some reason no one was terribly bothered by the body of a mostly-dead ex-lieutenant mysteriously going missing along with her (assumably grief-stricken) brother, there's still the issue of Harrison. Elway knows that Harrison is with Hannah, so he would have assumably reported Harrison as kidnaped when he awakens from his drug-induced stupor to find them gone and Deb and Dex in their respective predicaments. Even if the FBI were to give up search for Hannah, there's no way that they would ignore an American child who had been "kidnaped" by a convicted serial killer. And come on, they even had a destination too. Not to mention that a blonde woman and child can't be all that common of a sight in Argentina.
Also, I have to wonder about Harrison's other relatives. Not only did he have Astor and Cody as siblings (who were at least mentioned when Dex was making his grand get-away plans), but also his maternal grandmother, Rita's mom. As far as I can remember, she hasn't even been mentioned since before Rita and Dexter were married... I don't think she was even there for Rita's funeral. I mean, come on - Sylvia Prado manages to get a final appearance in the penultimate episode, but we're supposed to believe that a woman would just let a man leave the country indeterminately with one of her grandchildren, without so much as a phone call? Yeah, ok.
4: Hannah.
I've been wondering this ever since last season: why in the name of whatever is held sacred didn't Hannah cut and dye her hair and do something to disguise her face? I mean seriously, a box of hair dye is like $10, and any woman could give herself a halfway decent pixie cut for free. Those two simple things would go a long way in disguising someone. As far as simple steps of avoiding detection (to say nothing of the electric chair) go, you can't get much more bang for your buck than that. And she was married to an effing millionaire, for crying out loud. She could have simply gotten some elective plastic surgery and been set for life.
All in all, I'm really quite disappointed with the way that the series ended. I feel like it created more loose ends than it tied, and left quite a bit to be desired.
