I dont know if I read the book as a kid. I feel like I must've, but for the life of me I really cant \m/ remember. But the movie was such yummy nerdy goodness. Not a complete home run, but still very fun.
You may have noticed my current movie schedule lately has been involving matinees on the weekend. While that saves money, it does tend to be annoying when it comes to the kiddie movies especially so soon after its release. I love kids, but I can only handle so much of them when there's a birthday party taking up a row behind you, and most of them haven't learned that the movie theater is a quiet place. However, it was worth it when at the beginning when the Columbia Pictures logo with the torch lady came on screen and the kid behind me goes "Look its God. No, its Mrs God!!" So precious.
Back to the movie. Some of it was brilliant, some of it was brainless. A lot of the dialogue got very science nerdy, which I absolutely loved. But a lot of it was also incredibly pun-y which got old. Casting Mr T as the cop--brilliant. Having him be uber-agile to the point where he's actually bouncing ten feet in the air--not so much. Andy Samberg's character Baby Brent was a fun featured character, until we got to the end of his character arc which was just re-\m/-tarded.
The visual was really good, but they didnt meet my standards for a good 3-D. Meaning that nothing jumped out at you from the screen, even though it all looked really cool. If it wasnt for that bit of a headache I tend to get sometimes at these things, I woulda kept on forgetting I was watching a movie with a third dimension.
My favorite was the monkey Steve voiced by the magnificent Neil Patrick Harris. Thankfully I had done my homework beforehand and found out who he was playing. Otherwise, I woulda spent the whole movie trying to figure out which one he was. Given that monkey only had about half a dozen words in his vocabulary, it was a very under-utilized NPH. But just knowing that was him made me love the monkey even more.
Very fun for a kiddie movie. Good balance between self esteem message movie and family comedy. Glad I went, even if I had to deal with the non stop yakking of the little ones I was surrounded by.
