Dear university friends,
To ensure the continued health of our campus community, I am pleased to announce today that our campus will become a fully smoke-free campus by the end of this semester. We already are smoke-free in our buildings, but immediately following commencement this May, we will become smoke free on all our campus grounds as well.
A proposal to limit smoking on campus grounds came forward from the Student Government Association this fall and it was endorsed by the Faculty Senate. I am pleased to support those requests, and the best way to do that is to make our campus smoke free. We all agree that we have an obligation to do what we can to protect the health of our faculty, staff, students, and guests on our campus. We are joining hospitals, business, and government throughout the nation as well as our own state and city in taking action to
limit second-hand smoke.
We also understand that there are smokers on campus. We want to assist in this transition for them, so we will be offering smoking cessation programs this spring. More information will be coming soon on those sessions.
