Im not quite sure I 'get' this reboot or why it's necessary. I mean, why don't they do what Marvel did if they need a reboot and start another side universe like Marvel Ultimates instead of destroying their entire continuity. Oh well, glad Im not a DC fan.

man when does DC NOT do what Marvel is already doing?

The magic word of this reboot/relaunch is "accessibility". They're afraid new readers will be put off by all the convoluted plotlines and story contradictions. Never seemed to bother Christians (zing!) Seriously, this is the age of Wikipedia. If I want to know the Robin Du Jour's origin story or how the fuck Lex Luthor got elected President (I guess that isn't all that far-fetched) it takes me all of five minutes.
The one great advantage of being a DC fan is that I've known everything I need to know about it's two flagship superheroes before I learned to read. Everything else I've just picked up as I go along. I mean when you meet a new person you don't have to know everything single thing about their lives to like them. You're always coming in at the middle of somebody's story (unless they're a baby). Sometimes you lose touch and you miss a few things. That's just how life works.
