As one of my many attempts to improve the situation that FRED is currently in (which is a little better than when I started taking it to Boston Pizza, but not anywhere that I could rest on the egoboo given me at VCon), I've decided that some promotional art is needed. I've been giving that a fair bit of thought, the past couple of days. Ideally, I think some sort of bar/tavern scene showing a cross-section of genre concepts might work. The trick is not making it look too crowded. If you've seen the covers to the Callahan books, that's a good place to start.

At the risk of sounding glib or excessively coy, that's a question with a lot of possible answers, depending on what you meant when you asked those three simple words.

I notice, looking at your profile, that we have a few links in common. Most of which relate to Sin City. If you've been there, there's a chance you've seen me -- I'm a semi-regular, who's gets along pretty well with the key players behind that.

I'm also (as you've no doubt found out) the guy who's ended up in charge of the FRED pub night, tries to contribute to BCSFA, dabbles in photography (some of which can be seen on the Gothic BC website), and has wandered around the fringes of a few subcultures in his time.

There's more -- a fair bit more. But the puzzle of me is something I've been trying to define for a while now, so I apologize if these answers are not quite satisfactory. Perhaps, we shall cross paths sometime soon. That may help.

I actually made a poster for FRED at Denny's about a year ago that is the first poster for an Illustrator class and I wasn't entirely happy with it, the second poster I just reused my images and made it current and a bit cleaner. If you like them I can provide you higher res copies.

I do like that, it's a good first attempt.

I think you've illustrated the conundrum of boiling down a night that is not a specific-fandom meetup group down to anything iconic. The bubble motif is an interesting way around it (and could also suggest drinks).

While I'm not yet certain that I would use this particular version of the flyer, I must say I rather like the high-stepping bureaucrat in the corner there on the flyer artwork. I think we could incorporate him into future material, somehow, whether for FRED or the Royal Swiss Navy.
