I haven't really reconnected with all that many people that I used to know, but I have connected with a lot of people that I do know.
It seems that it's easier for people to make a small note of comment on their own FBook than it is for them to post something in LJ, or anywhere else.
*shrugs*
It also has a feature that wil send your cell a text message whenever someone sends you a text on there. The settings are adjustable, so you do/don't get text messages for some things.
