Most people I know who are into science fiction or fantasy have a favorite, or many favorite, worlds. I think it is the 'if' factor. What 'if' this were real, what 'if' I could experience it, what 'if' I were that character? You get to experience a world that is not our own as a story teller, moving your character about and interacting with others. It's a portal to 'if', creating anything your imagination can design, giving you free reign over that universe and everything in it. Law, Chaos, anything and everything, at your finger-tips. That world of wonder is just waiting for you, beconing you to explore it and to become a part of it.

Yes, but that could apply to nearly any fictional setting. I'm looking for the thing that triggers those 'if's and sets a setting apart from the others. My current theory is that the more you leave implied but unsaid, the more room there is for people's minds to turn and churn.

This is why the supporting characters of many series get more fan attention than the main cast. They get all the 'if's and I want to fully understand why.
