I really want to be an excellent musician now. It actually seems plausible for what may be the first time ever. I love brass. I actually feel like this could be my life's purpose, or at least like I could conceivably make it so

Ah yes, your request. Well, operations officers are basically the lackeys for Henderson. You do anything he deems fit. You paint the field, set up scaffolding, move water, make sure yard markers are out, taking care of lights, setting up for food during band camp. I would advise you to stay away from it. While it is a good way to get in shape, and build muscle, it takes away time to hang out with friends, and you get home later. Not to mention on Saturday rehearsals you have to be up (if it's Conway) like 3 hours earlier than anyone else, so as to paint the field. also, at competitions, you don't get to see as many bands because you're loading the truck. So, that's more or less what you do. I'm still sticking to my opinion of not doing it, but it's your choice.
