It's a good job that my mother has been discouraging me from the profession for years, because I'd make a crap teacher. My anti-authoritarian impulses are too strong for me to be comfortable in the position for any length of time. And there are good ways to use authority and bad ways to use it. Not all authority figures are total Principal Synders, it's only bad when you use it to bully and power tripping, not when you maintain order for the benefit of your students.
Guide them don't crush them? Guiding is authority in that you tell them what to do, but you don't make them bend to your will. If anyone disagree you can send them to the back of the class and offer to talk with them afterwards? That's what some of my better teachers have done, or they just say "that's enough now" and then talk to me later after class as oppose to yelling. Having email works well.
