It's a good job that my mother has been discouraging me from the profession for years, because I'd make a crap teacher. My anti-authoritarian impulses are too strong for me to be comfortable in the position for any length of time. It's still too soon since I was the one not paying attention in class for me not to feel like a hypocrite telling ( Read more... )

That's why I'm not a teacher. It takes being a monster, to know how bad monsters can get. ^_^

And there are good ways to use authority and bad ways to use it. Not all authority figures are total Principal Synders, it's only bad when you use it to bully and power tripping, not when you maintain order for the benefit of your students.

Guide them don't crush them? Guiding is authority in that you tell them what to do, but you don't make them bend to your will. If anyone disagree you can send them to the back of the class and offer to talk with them afterwards? That's what some of my better teachers have done, or they just say "that's enough now" and then talk to me later after class as oppose to yelling. Having email works well.

You're right, and that's more or less how I've been behaving so far. It's just that every so often I get flashbacks to when I was in their shoes and therefore I get these brief spasms of guilt.

I never wanted to be a teacher; it's just interesting to see the ways in which I was right.

If you want to lead a revolution of school-children, I would recommend that you get them in y10-11 -- before that they are oo immature and keen on fighting, and after that the exam stress will he made them into little zombies. You can some practice on mine?

Solid thinking there. However, as I repeatedly maintain, I do not actually want to lead a bloody revolution of anyone. That's the job of the figurehead while I remain the shadowy power behind the throne with a handy escape plan in case it all goes pear-shaped. *eg*
