Oh, show. Oh holy fuck, show. Oh, show!
Way to rip my heart out guys. I knew she was the werewolf and hence might end up dead, but the way they did it. That's the thing about Supernatural, they don't hesitate to make it hurt and they don't take the easy way out. Madison, well I fell in love with her and she and Sam were hot like burning. Nonetheless, there were so many ways they could have gone, even if they had to kill her. Most shows would have made it self-defense, or Dean would have snatched the gun and done it himself but they went for the most honest and painful resolution. It reminds me in some ways of The Farseer Series. Despite its disappointing ending and Robin Hobb's crazy, it's still one of my favourite fantasy series because all the actions have consequences. The main character goes through horrific torture and for the remainder of the books he's a fucked-up PTSD-ridden shell of a man - even while saving the world. And that's why I'll forgive Supernatural all its minor faults, because they never shy away from the emotional consequences.
I'll be intrigued to see fandom's reaction to the Playthings parallels here, particularly all those who felt Sam's reactions were incredibly selfish. Yes, Sam got to view things from the other side and experience just how devastating it is to be asked to kill someone you care about for the greater good; however, it's important to remember that he still went through with it, even when Dean tried to take the responsiblity for himself. In the view of the show, Madison was right. She knew it, Dean knew it and even Sam accepted it eventually. All of which raises disturbing questions about how the rest of the season is going to play out.
On a far less serious note, poor Sam. The only girls he's canonically slept with ended up dead -- truly a case of venom cock, if I ever saw one. We're not going to see any more Sammysex for a little while. Still,
just look at the guy. He may have a penis of death, but man, what a way to go. I'd risk it. *g*
