Fannish Things & Thoughts

Just an update on where my head is at these days.

1. Oz

Yeah, my love for this show isn’t going away any time soon. I envision myself participating in Oz Magi 2032, even if I have to fulfill my own wish. Heh.

The current Oz drabble tree reminded me that the very first Oz fic I wrote was for a drabble tree, back in February 2013. So this month is ( Read more... )

I'm sorry bout the Oz Daily comm, but if your heart isn't in it, you may as well make it an irregular thing if it all.
Hope you write that longfic.
Glad you're liking Homicide..I was surprised at how much I liked Daniel Baldwin too. Ah Melissa Leo is the best. I will forever ship Bayliss and Pembleton-my tragic Homicide OTP. More Ozzies to come.
Munch is such a sour delight too. Love him.

Too bad about Stranger things. It can be intimdating with larger fandoms, I know. But with all the badfic it might need some good fic, i.e yours. I feel the same about Hannibal fandom at times, but then an idea strikes and off I go. And maybe someone wil really dig your missing scene fic.

WHEEEEE! for longer fic!

I loved H:LOTS when I watched it oh, maybe ten years ago? I need to give that series a re-watch too.

We'll see! The idea of writing long fic is scary and intimidating, but I have a story I really want to tell!

Watching Homicide now is a bit like opening a time capsule. Remember beepers? Blouses with shoulder pads? Smoking in the workplace? It doesn't seem like the show should be this old. (Then again, I could say the same thing about me. LOL)

Like I said, I really don't want Oz Daily to die, but I thought I'd just take a short break from it after Christmas, and I found that I didn't really miss doing it. Maybe I just need to find a good theme or a treasure trove of photos somewhere to get motivated again ( ... )

I say, go for it with the long fic. Are you thinking of a one-shot or breaking it up into chapters with semi-frequent installments?

Sorry to hear about Oz Daily. I enjoyed looking at the pictures, but can fully understand your reasons for pulling back a bit.

I'm still working on S1 of "The Wire" which I got for Christmas. I get distracted with so many other things that I just haven't sat down to watch it in a while. I'll need to get back soon before I forget who everyone is. Except Omar, of course.

In an ideal scenario, I think I'd have a complete rough draft, and then post the story by chapters, polishing as I go. Maybe it wouldn't be so overwhelming that way. Also, drsquidlove used a similar approach in posting her epic Toby/Stabler and Toby/Murphy stories, and I thought it was a lot of fun from the perspective of a reader. The story would really need to be basically complete before I'd post anything, though. So many times I go back and add something at the beginning of a story because of something I've thought to do at the end. (Which is why I've always considered WIPs to be a bad idea ( ... )

Yes, the Wire is amazing. I keep meaning to re-watch it. The scope of it is just so impressive; it feels like Dickens in TV form.

So this month is my 5-year anniversary of writing Oz fic!

WOO HOOO! :) *fistbump*

Mr Star & I finished watching Justified recently and we both keep saying "we need another show" and then settle in for another re-run of Chopped Canada. (I ship unrequited pining!Brad/Eden, of course ( ... )

Sometimes it's just too tempting to use your favorite shows as comfort food, watching them over and over rather than taking the risk on something new. (I know all the punchlines on The Office before the actors say them.) It's funny... if I'd bought the Homicide DVDs on my own, it's very possible that they would've just sat on a shelf and collected dust. But since they were a gift, I felt more motivated to watch them. It's worked out well.

Thanks for the links to the writing comms! I'll check them out. I need to get going on this while I'm feeling inspired. If I can get a good start, I'll be more likely to stick with it.

Wait, what? You've only been around for five years? I thought you'd been in Oz forever! I got in for the 2012 magi, so we came in around the same time. Though your love is clearly much steadier than mine. I have a couple of Oz half-stories I really, really wish I could finish, but I'm not sure I've got anything left in me ( ... )

Thank you for your words of encouragement and advice!

My participation in the fandom probably seems longer because I have a level of enthusiasm that helps make up for my length of service. ;)

I have a couple of Oz half-stories I really, really wish I could finish, but I'm not sure I've got anything left in me. FINISH THEM! Maybe you don't hear it, but a small cheer goes up in the fandom whenever you post an Oz fic. (Also, SOMEone needs to write that Harrison/Murphy story ( ... )

All my encouragement and advice is 100% selfish.

Well, half my motivation behind Oz Daily was hoping other people would write fic based upon the pics I was posting, so yeah, I get it. :D

And the one I reeeeaaally like, 'cos it's just the coolest idea everrrrrr, would be as much work as Someone Like You.

Okay, now you're just torturing me. O_O

What you say about writing in order makes a lot of sense and helps confirm that that route is probably the better way to go. I guess it's worked for me so far, so I should stick with what I'm comfortable doing.

I'm very dialogue-driven, these days. Plenty of my drafts are just pages of dialogue with 'ADD BLOCKING' notes all over them.I think one of the reasons why I underestimate my stories' lengths is that most of my fic tends to be heavy on dialogue and not particularly atmospheric. The scenario in my head might play out in a thousand words, but when I actually type it up as people talking to one another in a realistic manner, a lot more words are necessary. And writing out just the ( ... )

I completely forgot Homicide had such a short S2. Wow. It's a great show. Wait until you see the Subway. WOW! That's my favorite. Robin Williams' episode was also damn powerful.

Agree with everything you said about Stranger Things. Such a compelling show.

Re: Oz, definitely go for the longer fic if the muses are telling you to. I'd be happy to proofread if you want.

I'm halfway way through Season 3 now. It's become more addicting the further I get into it! I looked up why S2 was so short, and apparently NBC decided to use it just as a mid-season temporary replacement for LA Law. Then they demanded changes (more female characters) for S3, which is why Crosetti was killed off.

The Robin Williams episode was in S2, and it was indeed amazing. It's easy to forget what a fantastic dramatic actor he was. I miss him. :(
