The skies were grey as drizzle started to falling slowly. The wind blew away the leaves, made them leaving the branches and flies into the thin air before fell down ever so softly, let the drizzle wetting them along with the ground. There was simply no sound to hear. Birds weren’t singing. Cars didn’t scratch their tire along the journey. There was simply quite and peace. Like the nature and the whole world tried to respect what the Kim’s family felt that time. The feel for losing someone they really loved, they really cared.
Their son, their brother, their cousin, their nephew and their best friend, Kim Kibum, was already giving up due his cancer which consuming him for almost this last two years.
He closed his eyes and never woke up.
He ended his story life.
Or..
Key slowly opened his eyes only to close them immediately when the sun blinded his vision. He shifted a bit from the ground; where he sat at and leaning heavily against the wall behind him. Key put his palm near his forehead, made a shield to protect his eyes as he slowly opened them again, quickly gazing around. He tried to address where he was and completely failed. The only things he knew that he was sat on the sidewalk, facing a rather large an asphalt road that he supposed as a boulevard.
There were so many people around him, probably hundred or so. From their face, Key somehow felt that those people were as confused as him, he shrugged. Key stood up, fixed his clothes and pants while his eyes kept eyeing every corner of the place and frowned. He didn’t know where he was and that was made him freaked out a bit. He tried to find someone he knew, his parents or his best friends..anyone. But no, they were completely stranger. Key took a deep breath to calm himself down.
A couple minutes later, Key saw about three big buses appeared from nowhere and slowly stop right in front of him. The buses were big and different from one another. The first bus looked extremely expensive, it painted with green and Key swore he could feel the comfortable feeling even without he had to see the inside. The second bus was blue and ordinary, just like the public bus he used to ride when coming back home from his university. Meanwhile, the last bus was, well, Key couldn’t object what the real color of the bus because it was completely looked ugly and worst and yeah, even Key didn’t want to see it for a long time.
People around him started to walking toward the bus, but he stand still. That was more because he confused about what to do.
“ Yah! “ Key protested when someone, who wanted to get closer to the bus, shoved him into the ground harshly. He rubbed his ass and kind of confused when he didn’t feel ache at all.
He felt really wrong and there was something nagged him.
“ Hey, are you okay? “
Key looked up and he saw a boy smiling so gently. Key just couldn’t help but smiling back to him and forget everything. The unknown boy held his hand out for Key to reach. Key without hesitated reached the boy’s hand and he slowly being dragged up to his feet.
“ Thank you. “ Key said and smile.
The boy chuckled, “ no need to say thank you for a little help like that. “
“ yeah.. but still.. “ Key shrugged whiles the boy only smiling at him.
The boy who stood before him looked around his age, about his height-- or maybe taller for inch-- and handsome. He had milky white skin, plump lips, soft brown hair that looked a bit messy as the wind kept blowing over it and a pair of chocolate orbs staring innocently straight into his eyes. He wore completely white; white shirt-white sweater-white jean-and white sneakers. Key frowned, slightly wondering who the hell he was and when he saw the way he smiling, Key wondering again if this boy was an angel or what. He chuckled with his own thought.
“You’re Kim Kibum, right?“
Key jolted out from his thought and stared at the boy suspiciously, “ ye-yes I’m. How could you know my name? “
“I’m Lee Jinki. “He said, grinning, then continued “I’m the angel who has a duty to pick you up from here. “
There was silence as Key just stared at the boy in front of him, completely blank.
“You’re a what? “
The boy - Jinki - blinks, “a-angel?” He shook his head a bit, maybe because his word sounds more like a question than an answer, then spoke again,”I mean, I’m an angel. “
Then Key couldn’t help but laugh behind his palm. He knew this boy-- with his handsome face, his completely white appearance and his bright smile -- would make a fine angel. But calling himself as an angel was just sounds wrong, like seriously.
“what’s so funny? You don’t believe that I’m an angel, do you? “
Key still laughed.
“ yah, Kim Kibum.. “ Jinki whined.
“ okay, okay. You’re an angel. “Key said with sarcasm clearly written on his voice, “just don’t tell me that I’m already died and that’s why you came here to pick me up. “ He rolled his eyes, wanted to continue his laugh but the looked Jinki gave to him prevented him to. Key gulped.
“ but, um,” Jinki said, hesitated a bit to continue but then shrugged “ well, that’s true. “
Key looked up to Jinki, his eyes reflect some fear. For some unknown reason, Key felt really scared. He felt really wrong ever since the beginning, like he was forgot about something but he just couldn’t figure it out. Key felt his hands trembling.
“what’s true? “ Key asked, his voices sounded hoarse.
Silence.
“ you’re already died. “
Key almost passed out.
“So..um, “ Jinki eyeing the boy who sat beside him on the blue bus, “ are you okay now? “
Key nodded and avoiding Jinki’s eyes. The angel seemed understand what Key had felt that time, he patted the boy’s head and smiled in comforting way. Key looked up, stared straight into Jinki’s eyes for seconds and then wandered his eyes back to the window. He sighed.
“ you know, I just.. “ Key stopped. He took a deep breath then turn his head back, facing Jinki. “ I. I don’t know.. “
“ shocked? “ Jinki asked, raised an eyebrow.
“ yeah.. “
Jinki chuckled, “that’s normal, Kibum-ah. Everyone who came here for the first time felt the same way like you. “
Yeah, of course they were. Key leaned his head to the seat and closed his eyes. He finally remembered everything. About his cancer which was getting worst for the last three months. The night when he felt so hard to breath and his vision blurred. He asked his mom to call his dad because he really wanted to see him for the last time. His mom started to panic, called the doctor as she kept stroking his hair and the tears running down onto her cheeks. His dad finally came and knelled beside his bed, begging him to never give up. He just smiled weakly and whispered I’m sorry. His parents cried harder and it was really pained him to see them like that but he simply couldn’t bear it anymore. He then whispered I love you Mom, Dad.. Thank you for everything and closed his eyes.
He just never thought would wake up as a soul.
The bus kept moving and Key opened his eyes. Jinki dragged him from the first place he woke up to the blue bus and he remembered he was too lifeless to protest why they had to ride the blue bus not the green one. Key really wanted to see the inside of the green bus, he dare to bet, it would be awesome.
“yah Jinki hyung..“ Key just found out that the angel was two years older than him, “why we have to ride this bus not the green one? I think it’ll be more comfortable. “
“ is not me who make us riding this bus instead the green one.” The angel replied.
Key gave him a confused look, “then, who?”
Jinki simply chuckled and pointed his index finger to the younger, “you.”
“ mee?? Wah-uh-um,” Key struggled to calm himself down. He couldn’t scold an angel, right? “how could me was the one who made us riding this bus? You were the one who dragged me here!”
The angel just looking at the younger and kept chuckled. For some unknown reason, Key looked so cute when he was angry in Jinki’s eyes. Key frowned, obviously didn’t understand why the elder kept making fun on him. Became irritated, Key smacked Jinki’s arm and the angel flinched a bit. He didn’t know that the boy, who was too skinny in Jinki’s opinion, could be that strong. Jinki rubbed his sore arm as Key kept glaring at him, scarily.
“I’ll explain this, okay?” Jinki laughed slightly, “don’t be so scary like that..”
Key raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms over his chest, silently ordered the angel to explain immediately.
Jinki sighed as he wondered why this boy had to be so demanding. This was the first time he felt so intimidated by someone.
“which bus you ride here it depends with how you behave when you’re still alive.” Jinki started and Key just gave him a ‘huh’ look, obviously still confused. So the angel continued, “the green one is the most exclusive one, sent to pick up those people who doing really well in their life. You know, like always praying hard, never cursed, kind and care with all people also their surround nature.”
“are those people really exist?” Key asked disbelief.
“well, yeah.. but no many--”
“I knew it!” Key snapped, nodding, then mumbled how that really impossible to find that kind of people. People with no sin in this era were just like searching a needle inside ton straws.
Felt that the younger no longer pay attention to him-- drowned inside his own thoughts as he kept talking with no one in particular -Jinki cleared his throat. Key then realized that he supposed to listen to Jinki’s explanation. He mumbled a sorry then grinned.
“then, the blue one,” Jinki continued, “sent to pick up those people who pretty kind but also sometimes doing bad things. But not that bad, still in the line that God could forgive. And the last bus, the…, well actually I couldn’t figure what color the bus is, sent to pick up those people who always doing bad entire their life or do big sin, you know, like killing people and stuff.”
Key nodded, shuddered a little as he remember how the last bus looked like. No wonder it was so ugly since it sent to pick up those big sinner people. He then freaked out just by imagine where the bus would bring them to. Key silently thank God that he doesn’t have to ride that bus, but also cursed himself for not be a better person when he was still alive, so he could ride the green one and that would be perfect.
“so, Jinki hyung…”
“yeah?”
“actually, where this bus would bring us to?” Key asked then gulped nervously as he continued, “we’ll meet God, would we?”
The angel then burst into laughter and that earn him a slap on his arm.
“yah, I’m serious you know! Can you just--”
“okay, okay.” Jinki snapped, held his hands up just to protect himself from Key’s habit; abusing, “no, we’ll not because you have to wait until all people in the whole world die first to meet God, you know.”
“huh?” obviously Jinki’s answer just made Key even confused than before, ”So where are we going? Heaven? Or…or, uuh, h-hell maybe?”
As Jinki chuckled and shook his head, Key could feel that the bus slowly began to stop. Everyone in the bus, which Key supposed as his fellow death souls, quickly checked what the hell happen by looking outside through the bus windows. Key then did the same action. He knelled on his seat and narrowed his eyes, trying to figure where they were. All that Key could see was a big white-- a very big he might add --gate and well, that’s it.
“what is that?” Key whipped his head towards Jinki direction that now also looking outside the window, beside him. The elder then turned his head, facing him with a wide smile.
“welcome to Soul City, Kibum.”
