Growing up in a culturally diverse city where many people were immigrants or first-generation Americans, I do feel that standards are skewed and need to be changed. Discriminating against someone who wears their hair natural or who speaks with a non-American accent is not the same thing as asking people to adhere to company policy regarding standards of attire and behavior. I fail to see how corn rows or a guayabera will take away from any company's image. As long as the person is a) qualified for the position, b) isn't sloppy, c) acts appropriately for the work environment -- why should it matter? Many years ago, it was a big deal for women to get jobs outside the home; she really had to prove herself to the men. There was, and still is, this notion that a woman needs to "act like a man" to get ahead -- and I believe that a woman needs to be better than her male counterparts to be "equal" to them. I thought your topic on human value and worth was a great one and thought provoking. Maybe people didn't answer b/c its summer and they aren't paying as much attention to LJ. I've noticed that when its summer people don't seem to comment as much.

My husband said that he had plenty of feelings about the topic, but articulating them was another matter. I just wanted to know where other people stood!
If I was hiring I wouldn't want to hire the person you mentioned who showed up 30 minutes late, sloppy, and had a huge ego, even if they were qualified. I wouldn't want to hire them thinking that they would be a prima donna and that they would think they shouldn't be held to the same standard that everyone else was held to
