Once Upon A Time by Marylyle Rogers.

Once Upon a Time was the first non-Harlequin romance novel I ever read. As a 12-year-old I was utterly amazed at the prettiness of this book, the people in it, and yeah, the sex. Hey, she totally ripped that illegitimate-kid-who-isn't-his-but-he-is-noble-so-he-raised-her-anyway from Jane Eyre. Or is that a common plot point for romance novels?

Yeah, you see a few of the not-really-his kids running around. Usually it's the kid of some irresponsible brother. Occasioanlly you get one where the kid is taken in from some horrible parents. And there are tons of governess heroines, nurse heroines and such. So you can end up with Jane Eyre in a different era, with sex scenes. It happens a lot. It must be a common female fantasy- sort of a beauty and the best thing. With a kid.

Jane Eyre is better though. It's the best one. And they didn't need sex scenes.
