So, I was reading through the sites that Sheila posted, and then went off and researched veganism on my own, and I got a full-force smack-in-the-face reminder of why the whole vegan and raw food "movements" piss me off so irrationally ( Read more... )

I agree with you that so many vegan sites are ridiculously immoderate about their beliefs (and raw foodism is about as healthy as eating nothing but baby carrots for the rest of your life), but I think the practice itself isn't that bad. I said in my reply to your comment that I think the reason a lot of people go vegan is for the effect it has on the environment, as well as the health benefits.

As for talking to your doctor... whenever I have a check-up, my doctor always asks me if I've been getting enough calcium, and how I should drink enough milk or whatever, so I imagine it would be kind of hard to avoid talking to your doctor about it unless you're actively trying to.

See, a lot of people don't get check-ups--matter of fact, most that I know. And switching to a vegan or raw diet can really take a toll on your body if you don't know what you're doing (and no amount of website-reading will ensure that you've considered everything), so talking specifically to your doctor about meeting up with a nutritionist, checking for any specific deficiencies you should be aware of, etc. is pretty important. You're supposed to do that no matter what your diet is, but particularly for a change in one ( ... )
