How to define poverty. What I mean is, is there a threshold money availability for a person which is needed to cater to most of that person's needs (not greeds) and enable him to be whatever (s)he wants to be. May be PPP comes close.

If someone doesnt have enough to meet even the "basic" needs, not "most" of the needs - thats where I would draw the line.
If a person is not able to afford 3 healthy meals a day for her/his family, I would define them to be living in poverty.
Food, clothing, shelter in that order. In radical simplicity, the author mentions that the average per capita income of the developing world is US $4000/- (per year, of course)
He has a comparison of a few developed countries vs a small village in Kerala on how the "quality of life" in this small village in Kerala is comparable on several indices with the developed worlds. Only difference is that the per capita of Kerala is a very small fraction of the western world.
They seem to know the secret to be living contently - just above poverty line, without running after money. Thats something to learn, isnt it?
