And for some reason, your post reminded me of J.R.R. Tolkien (I don't know if you like his books or not):

One of his stories started something like that. :)

I've wanted to read Tolkien for a while now. The thing you're referencing is from the book Smith of Wootton Major, I believe. I'll have to pick that one up sometime :)
