She looks into his empty sockets. Nothing stares back, but shadows. That's all Hein is. Shadows and bone and death and...
He had ambition, once. He had skin and muscle and a heart that throbbed with life. It feels as though if she were to close her eyes for only a moment she could see him through her eyelids. He had an open face framed by short cut brown curls. Skin tanned with sun, yet soft with the shelter of an indoor job. His clothes were clean cut and fancy, average for a king's court. A plume here and a decorational button there were the only hints that he rather liked the sharp looking extravancy.
And she thinks he had laugh lines around his mouth, at the corner of his eyes. Little lines etching deeper as each year passed. Maybe his smile was soft and slow coming, like light in the dawn sky first peeking over the horizon.
But something happened. Something happened and he died so bitter that when his flesh rot and his bones creaked in the past summer's quakes... He couldn't keep resting, but instead felt shadows creep into his corpse and crush the little dust left that was his heart.
When she opens her eyes she sees a poor man tormented beyond his time and it pains her that there is no happy ending for former Chancellor Hein. He looks up at her from where these four Warriors of Light have struck him to the floor with sightless sockets painted in shadow. And then she raises her Red Mage gloved hand and calls upon the magic within her. Fire engulfs the sorry form of Hein.
It burns till nothing remains and what a sad way to end such a grand adventure. On to the next in their long and epic quest...
