She didn't realize it at first. A laugh, a smile, a clumsy step that made her grab for his supportive arm--at first it was just all fun. Games, good times, a way to save herself from boredom and the computer illuminated darkness of the labs.
And then it was suddenly more. A picnic, flowers in her hair, his head nestled in her lap as he sprawled across the grass all long, awkward, gangly limbs that made her smile, made her giggle, made her want to bend down and--
And when she looked down into those eyes staring up at her as if she were the sun--all she saw was his face. No not his face, His face. Dr. Grimoire's face. And she was so sorry. She'd never meant--
But it was too late for apologies now. He was gone and she was on her own. No guiding hand save Professor Hojo's to lead her now. All alone without him and when she looked down at that happy face nestled so nicely in her lap all she saw was sorrow, regret and so much guilt it made her cringe. "I'm so sorry," she whispered, excusing herself, and standing up. "I'm so sorry," she repeated and grabbed the picnic basket, lightly setting the plates back in. "I'm so sorry," she did her best not to sob and made a smart walk back to the manor.
It was not the first time she'd said those words and neither was it the last--I'm so sorry, so sorry, I'm so sorry Vincent Valentine.
For everything.
