Today I woke up and mowed the yard, changed a diaper or two, and went with Wendy to lunch with a friend who's in town for the summer. After lunch, Wendy went to a baby shower and I went home. Perhaps all was not lost for the chipmunk; Gypsy routinely brings them into the house, carrying them by the neck as you describe, and lets them go, whereupon they cavort merrily about the house for whatever length of time it takes me to catch and remove them. (Current record: 4 days.) Apparently they go limp when so carried but revive instantly when set down. So if the cat made the mistake of letting go at any point, the chippie might have made its escape.

If not, there's about 15 billion of the little buggers per square acre, so it's not like the population's going to suffer...

That said, I think you should avoid having very small animals as pets. :D
