I don't know. I'm stunned. If you look at Yunus, for example, he actually made a MATERIAL change. All Obama has done so far was talk. He talked well, but what has he actually achieved?

Yeah, he's getting a Nobel to do his job better than the Shrub.

Kissinger, vash, Kissinger ...

Comparatively, Obama's overdue ;-)

I LOVE THAT STORY! I know it's wrong to have a favourite neighbourhood abuse story, but it's mine, and only because the cat was found and the women are fine. When I saw the headline, I had to read it to find out why on earth they ate curry from a catnapper -- subeditorial GENIUS!

As for Obama, look, on the one hand, I thought the same thing. On the other hand, the Cairo speech represents a MASSIVE shift in American interaction with not just the Islamic world, but with every nation outside the US. Obama has set out a radically different policy and made very strong work in shifting his whole government apparatus to the new footing in only nine months. And I think his work in resurrecting American science may be one of the few plusses in the global environmental outlook at the moment, so I'm OK. Better too early than too late!

It's genius writing, definitely.

RE Obama: I'm actually one of his fans, but I feel I want to judge him at the end of the presidency. I'm too much of a historian to not feel that we should judge "great men" when they are done. There are too many examples of people that entered the stage as Messiahs and left... not having redeemed anything. With the amount of political spin and marketingt involved, I'm not even sure I can trust my gut that tells me "he'll be great".

I would have been thrilled with a few years in the future, since it would then not be attracting all the debate. However, that said, the award is for: "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"

He's pulling out of the ridiculous war in Iraq, has brought Iran back to the disarmament table, extended the first olive branch I can remember from a US President to the moderate Middle East and made Europe happy to be part of 'the West' again ;-)

I think he will be great, though he may be great with appalling stomach ulcers from stress.

Yeah. Let's agree the prize is a few years early. But with 200 nominees... there must be people with results there. Is he on the same level as Yunus, or Gorbachev, or Medecins sans Frontieres? The UN/Kofi Anan?

Do lesbians eat chicken tikka?? I mean, I understand why the guy needed to specify that the neighbours were lesbians just in case we, the readers, mistook them for normal, legitimate human beings.

Well, the guy ordered the curry, so fairly sure it's Chicken Tikka. And, yeah, that "newspaper" is not above using the "freaks" to "entertain".

Myth: The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.

More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.

Let's hope it works.
