Have you ever read anything with the Guardians of the Galaxy? Especially Quasar?
I read a Quasar origin story and it just...I got so many Pheels from it. So, it was from the actual Captain America comic back in like 1978 but still...
It's about this guy who joins SHIELD to make a difference and surpasses every test BUT they're worried he's TOO nice. They're not sure what to do with him so he goes back home to his mom and his old room.
Guess who's on a HUGE poster next to his bed?

His estranged dad pulls strings so he ends up working for this SHIELD project at Stark Industries which is when he ends up accidentally being a superhero due to some bracelets and being a big damn hero...
As I was reading it, it was just...please someone do an AU with Phil!
Anyway, your story reminded me of that since you had his parents get divorced, too.
Wendell is even blond like comic book Coulson.
Did I mention Quasar is impossible to kill?
