VAST artwork project

As some of you know, VAST have been hard at work completing their latest record April. Because no one understands VAST music better than you, it only makes sense to let you design the art. The contest runs from November 10th until December 10th. Here are the rules:

First Place:

Fans are encouraged to submit original artwork designed specifically for the front and back covers of the "April" album. The winner’s name will appear in the album’s liner notes, with full credit given to the artist. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced and burgeoning artists to have their artwork displayed on an album that will be seen by millions of people! It will also be an impressive credit to your art portfolio or design resume.

Second Place:

Because we anticipate more than one great submission, Vast’s second choice will be used for the limited edition CD that will be available online before the album hits stores.

Third Place:

If you weren’t talented enough, or, how should we say this? "Good" enough to be chosen for first or second place, we will still use your lousy art for a tour poster. Who knows how many we will print up though? Fifteen? Tops?

Just kidding, we will print up a lot.

Four through Ten:

All submissions received will be personally reviewed by VAST. When the contest has closed, VAST will select their ten favorite submissions. The artists who are selected will each receive a pair of VIP tickets to a VAST show in their area.

A note from Jon Crosby:

"I’m really excited about this. I’m drooling. Actually, I’m entering this contest myself. In past contests the prize is usually getting to meet "me" so I don’t enter. I meet me too much.
On a serious note, this is my favorite (Vast) album so far and it has a very human feel to it. I want the artwork to feel that way as well. I am not interested in digital manipulations of digital art. I want to see stuff made from photos people have taken or artwork created by hand. That is what I plan on doing. Hopefully everyone else will like the concept. If they don’t they can go to hell, graphic design school or Canada. Ta-ta."

If you are still interested in entering the contest after reading Jon’s distasteful note, you can download a high resolution PSD file of the VAST logos here http://realvast.com/logo

Please send all submissions to vastart@realvast.com

All entries should be in PSD format with all layers unlocked and visible. A resolution of at least 250 DPI and print dimensions of 5.25 x 5.25 inches.

VAST art contest disclaimer:

Winners will be contacted by email. Their names and the artwork submitted may be displayed online. Artists must submit two pieces of original artwork. This means art designed by you, not some cool picture you found on a Google images search or that you scanned out of your art history book. All submissions will be researched thoroughly by an art historian. So we will know it if you try to pass off a Jackson Pollock or a Picasso painting as your own original design. Any submissions deemed to be inauthentic will be disqualified, needless to say. The art submitted must be free from royalties and not copyright protected. The two pieces of art must compliment each other. The reason for this is that one piece will serve as the cover art, while the secondary piece will serve as the insert for the back of the CD. When you submit your art, please indicate which piece you intend to be the primary (cover) art and the secondary (back) art. All submissions are subject to display at the discretion of the band for promotional purposes. The submissions selected will be become the sole property of VAST, and will be displayed at the discretion of the band for all promotional purposes. VAST will thereafter permanently retain the rights to the work, and the artist may not use the art to promote any other band, product or event. Any usage of the artwork by artist for any purpose other than the promotion of VAST must be approved by VAST. Artist must submit a written request to VAST and receive express written permission from VAST before proceeding with the exhibition or usage of the art for any other purpose besides self-promotion or promotion of VAST. The artist may include the artwork in their personal portfolio, resume, or website, as long as the work remains unaltered, and it is made known that the artwork was designed exclusively for and appeared on the April album. Artists must submit along with their artwork their full name, age, email address, phone number, and city, state and country of residence. In addition, artist must indicate in the body of an email that they are submitting their own original artwork for consideration for the forthcoming VAST CD entitled April, and it must be stated that they understand their art will become the property of VAST upon submission, to be used for promotional purposes by the band. In addition, if you have a website for your original art, please include that along with your submission. If you are selected for the top ten, we will include your name and website in bulletins on My Space and the RealVast message board when the winners are announced.
