Clinton was in a similar position at a similar time in his presidency, and he managed to turn it around. I'm still a little optimistic.

Unfortunately that's why I'm unhappy. Clinton managed to pull some akido on the conservatives during his term, but in doing so he let certain economic fundamentals worsen, and allowed them to dismantle various key protections such as the Glass/Steagall act, which led more or less directly to the banking crisis
