[For Dick] Backdated to genderswitch

There are two distinctly separate parts of Lew that are observing and remarking on his current situation: Lewis Nixon as charming date and Lewis Nixon as best friend. They've never existed simultaneously before, and it seems unnatural for them to start now, because they seldom agree. He keeps swinging back and forth so much he's starting to feel ( Read more... )

Finding a dress appropriate to wear on a date is definitely not something I'd ever thought I'd have as an objective, and yet somehow I'd managed to find something suitable, with a little advice from friends who were used to being female. Getting ready in my room as Nix sets things up, I'm trying to think about this just as us being as we usually are, best friends who spend a lot of their time together and have ever since we met, but it's pretty hard to ignore what makes this situation a little on the FUBAR side of things, especially when it's staring me in the face every time I look into a mirror or even just look down at myself and my much more petite frame.

Pushing aside whatever uneasy feelings I may have, I emerge to find a nicely set table and give Nix a small smile that manages to look at least somewhat relaxed. "This looks nice."

It's easier to vow to keep his wits about him when he's not staring at the lithe form and easy smile of Rita Hayworth, and Lew falters, if only for a scant few seconds, politely in awe. "I didn't make any of it," he confesses when he's regained his ability to speak, "But that's a good thing. You look-" Fuck, what does he say? Gorgeous had been the word on the tip of his tongue, but this is Dick he's wooing, if he can even call it that. He laughs instead, with a sheepish duck of his head. "You look beautiful, and it's really fucking weird to tell you so," he admits, and peeks back up to her with a smile.

I'm a little relieved that he didn't make the dinner, but I refrain from a sarcastic comment, because he went to the effort to put everything together and that counts for something. I laugh a little self-consciously at the compliment, ducking my own head briefly. "If it's any consolation, it's weird to hear it," I reply - weird both because it's not a word I would ever have thought to apply to myself and because of who is saying it to me.

It's instinct that has Lew holding a chair out for her, and reality that makes him feel a little foolish for doing so. "I have to admit, it's really difficult to figure out how to act right now," he says as he takes his own seat, pours some wine for himself and water for her. "My body and my head aren't agreeing on much. You do look stunning, though. Breathtaking, even. If you looked like a hag, I wouldn't be having a problem."
