I had been thinking of reading His Dark Materials for a while. With the movie coming out there was more urgency. Finally despairing of getting our trilogy copy back soon, I borrowed it from a neighbor and started reading. Suddenly, only one chapter into the book, a plan developed for an extended set of six of us plus two parents to see the movie. ( Read more... )

I was annoyed that Lyra just "somehow knew" which of the umpteen meanings for each symbol was meant for any given question--without even knowing what they all were in the first place. The movie hints that there's something about her heritage that makes her the only one who can read it. The book doesn't really touch on that.

I haven't seen that Dust actually does anything to people who are not obsessed by it.

That's a very good point--we only have the word of some very unreliable characters on what Dust actually is or does.

I had thought of the demons as physical beings, but I'm not sure there's anything written about them affecting the physical world, is there? They can attack each other...well, other humans *can* touch them, but there is that strong taboo against it. I'm not sure.

As for a limited power for knowing the true answer to any question...hey, you've got the Internet! (You did say "limited.") :D
