Onion Knight wasn't very happy about that prospect.
A thought occurred to him. "How much have you been told about Vatheon, anyway?" he asked, tilting his head.
Onion Knight was sure Squall could handle most of the things Vatheon could throw at him, but there was always the potential for unpleasant surprises that Onion Knight thought that maybe he could make less unpleasant for him. And... well, there seemed to be a lot of oddities in this place, so there was always the chance Squall knew something Onion Knight hadn't been told. It was only logical for them to pool together their knowledge, in his opinion.
I'm older, I can glare at you all I wantrequiem_grieverOctober 18 2011, 16:48:29 UTC
That was an odd question. Shouldn't the kid know more than him? Onion Knight was probably more interested in fishing for information than wondering what he didn't know.
"Just some basic things," he replied. "This is some place in another dimension with, naturally, no way out. Pay for things with the tattoo." Absently, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the starfish communicator, spinning it around in his hand. "This stupid thing is supposed to be a communication device. Touch the coral once a month for some reason."
I'll sit on you if you keep doing that >8(not_for_cookingOctober 19 2011, 11:03:37 UTC
Onion Knight nodded as Squall spoke. These were things he was already familiar with...
... Except the last one. Onion Knight frowned. Squall had suddenly reminded him of something he'd read in the Welcoming Committee's Brochure. He'd totally forgotten about the coral supposedly healing some illnesses. "I didn't know we were supposed to do that once a month."
He'd touched it by accident once, some time after he arrived, but hadn't ever since. Half-thinking aloud, he said, "Maybe that's what causes the sleep comas the brochure was talking about." He looked away for a moment. "Yesterday I found out I slept for a month."
He only remembered falling asleep, feeling ill, before waking up to the kraken destroying the city.
...you know I can just push you off, right? Zidane weighs more than you.requiem_grieverOctober 20 2011, 03:51:11 UTC
"Well, now you know."
Sleep comas. Squall had heard about them from Selphie. She had supposedly just woken up from one shortly after he arrived. If not doing so would put someone out for a month like Onion Knight said, then, well, maybe he should make sure to touch the coral once in a while.
As if! Everyone knows Square protagonists are twigs.not_for_cookingOctober 20 2011, 11:36:59 UTC
Onion Knight had no qualms sharing what he knew with someone he knew and trusted. They were all in the same situation, after all. There were a few other things he knew, but maybe it would be a good idea to talk about each of them one at a time.
He decided to start with the not-so-nice things.
After a brief moment of trying to figure out how to word this, Onion Knight said, "Sometimes there are curses. I was told the effects are random, but they only last a week." He frowned. He wasn't sure whether he wanted to talk about the one curse he did experience. Being a poncle was really annoying.
... Squall didn't need to know about that.
Continuing, "I wasn't around for these curse weeks, but apparently people have--" Hmm, come to think of it, job changing wasn't really a thing in Squall's world, was it? "--woken up with a change of clothes and different powers. Or they grew animal ears and tails. Another curse caused a rubber duck rainfall."
That includes you.requiem_grieverOctober 20 2011, 20:54:35 UTC
It was then Squall decided that there was just no fully understanding this place and that he should just stop trying for his own sanity's sake. Every time it seemed like he could finally get used to something he learned, something else would come along, something far more far fetched and outlandish.
Well, yes. But -I- am wearing armour.not_for_cookingOctober 22 2011, 11:51:29 UTC
Squall looked pretty unimpressed by the news. But then again, Squall always looked unimpressed.
"There's the Nostalgia Nook." A place he kept on forgetting to visit at some point. "If there's something you want from your world, or someone else's world, you might be able to find it there."
Maybe something to remind Squall of the person waiting for him back in his home world? he thought. He kept that thought to himself, though; Onion Knight was sure Squall would just get grumpy at him if he didn't.
"But you have to pay with Starfish Tokens." Onion Knight sighed and made a face before adding, "You apparently need to work for those."
Still a pipsqueak thoughrequiem_grieverOctober 23 2011, 02:37:36 UTC
If only Onion Knight knew how irritated and frustrated Squall was at that moment. Not at him, but at this whole situation. Stuck in a different world, nothing he could do about it, and at least during the War of the Gods, he had the familiarity of having someone give him a task to do.
When Onion Knight mentioned the Nostalgia Nook, Squall's hand immediately went for his neck. Sure enough, the chain necklace was there. And the ring? Yes, he still had that too. Those two pieces of jewelry and his Gunblade (and he definitely knew he had that) were the three things he cared about having. Anything else he could do without or was easily replaced. He let his hand drop and hoped the kid wouldn't ask about it.
But he probably would because that was what Onion Knight did: ask questions and stick his nose in other people's business.
Well, Onion Knight didn't want Squall being a grumpy guts at him, so he didn't ask further when Squall's hand went for his neck. Besides, he already had a pretty good idea why~~ Squall didn't really seem like it at first, but Onion Knight figured he was actually a kind of sentimental guy under the gruff exterior. That was why he'd believed in Cloud's lie way back when, right?
Instead, Onion Knight added, "Some people have gone back to their home worlds before, but no one knows how or why. But..." He suddenly felt awkward asking this, and looked away. "If you need something to do, there's a defence force with people from other worlds." Onion Knight had a more determined look on his face when he added, "It's our job to help protect people in the city."
Squall didn't think that hoping Onion Knight wouldn't ask questions would amount to anything, but apparently, it did. Still, it was quite fortunate for Onion Knight that he did not have the ability to read minds.
Squall's first thought that it was pretty good that the city had some kind of defensive measure, because if being attacked was as common as he had heard, this place, as magical or omnipotent or whatever the hell it was, wouldn't be able to stand up to repeated attacks without something to repel those invading forces. But it also brought back memories of all the battles he had been in, and the attack on Garden that he had just gone through before being brought here.
"I'll think about it," he said. He wasn't entirely sure about committing himself to such a thing and was still in his mercenary mindset. Do things when contracted, and protect your own.
And right now, he didn't exactly consider Vatheon 'his own.'
/did you level up?not_for_cookingOctober 26 2011, 11:14:27 UTC
It was hard to not feel disappointed with Squall's answer, but... he hadn't exactly said 'no' either. Maybe that maybe would turn into a yes later, once he was more accustomed to the underwater city.
Trying to shrug off the disappointment -- it wasn't like he'd wanted Squall to join or anything! -- Onion Knight asked after an awkward pause, "Hey, so... have you found a place to stay? It'd be easier to meet up if I know where to find you."
Because he vastly preferred to meet people in person than fumbling with the communicator.

Squall knew that with his luck, he'll probably end up in that force sooner or later. Onion Knight or maybe even someone else would find a good reason to convince him, which is why he said he'd think about it rather than an outright refusal.
"I'm staying in a hotel for now," he replied. "But I won't be forever." Sure, it was free and had many amenities, but to Squall, there was also a lack of privacy and a bunch of small, minor things that annoyed him. A hotel was a nice thing to see when you've been on the move constantly, especially if you haven't seen a proper bed in a while, but staying there would drive him up the wall sooner or later.
So when Onion Knight caught sight of Squall, he approached. It was hard to keep his relief from his voice, but he tried, anyway. "You're alright!"

He had no idea why that last one was important.

"What about you? What do you know?"
Squall had shared what he knew. It was only fair.
