Oh, this was gorgeous! At first I did think it was from from Sirius' POV with this line: "It was only due to pure luck and the persistence of Dumbledore that he was among the living."

But then as the story progressed I was certain it was Severus, but I was right the first time!

It's true, they really are quite similar, depending on how you look at it.
