This is hardly a surprise. American English settled into a single standard for its spelling and grammar far earlier than the British did, largely because the regional dialects of the Big Island tended to be so radically different from one another American English was much more homogenized, having started from a small sampling of settlers whose dialects blended naturally.
At least, I think that's the explanation I remember. Couldn't source that to save my life.
I also really wish they had spelled traveler correctly.
