It took me forever to figure out what Inara was hinting at. I should have tipped to the "bounty hunters + Serenity = massive suckiness," but I knew John was safe, so my brain refused to go there. *g*
Yay John! Yay Zoe! Yay potential Dean and plotness!
Barring any surprises, you will see Dean very soon.
And yes, they've had problems with bounty hunters before this, and if you like you can spend a few happy minutes imagining the enormous blowup after John left Serenity and Zoe followed him out, because Mal probably had to be physically restrained from storming out after them and dragging Zoe back to Serenity, especially after River made that "he's a hunter" comment. Which would have been funny, but in a kind of tragic way.
I think they don't like strangers, on Serenity, and like Inara says, that's not an irrational paranoia for them.
You'll probably need to tell me when to *stop* bothering you about this story. It has eaten my brain, although it's also making me very happy.
I'm glad that you liked the interaction -- it's not an obvious choice to put Inara and John together, but I was trying to figure out how to bring her into the story, and this is how the scene came out. And I think Mal's being pretty smart, letting Inara persuade him to let her go talk to John (because if Mal went, they'd end up each other for a while and nothing important would get said, although they'd both feel better about things.)
Wonderful setup. And thank you for John's perception of Inara as a potential threat. So few writers grant her the ambiguity that she, along with everyone else on the crew, really does have.
I think that John doesn't like surprises anyway, and Inara is definitely a surprise. But also, what Inara does is a weird kind of psychological warfare, and my guess is that John's very vulnerable to that kind of thing.
Glad you liked it -- I may email you to witter on about this at some point, if it wouldn't seem to be an imposition.
OMG PLEASE DO!!! (I've been working horribly long hours this past weekend/week, up until yesterday, which accounts for my lack of maundering in your direction. But oh, I've been muttering various Winchester-related mutters, believe me...)
