Yeah, he seems to almost be incapable of producing truly memorable material without someone like John Lennon (or even Linda) to keep him grounded. Otherwise he becomes so entrenched in bubblegum that he can't free himself. I remember Dana Carvey hit on that in a Saturday Night Live sketch a long time ago called "The Sinead O'Connor Awards", basically playing him as a bizarrely easy-going, babbling caricature.
