Measurable progress can be reassuring. Make sure you are weighing/measuring yourself at the same time every day (I tend to do mine after PT in the morning). Another progress you might look at is circumference of different areas of your body.
When on the Army Weight Control Program, a loss of 3 to 8 pounds per month is considered satisfactory. (From personal experience, you won't get in trouble for more than that, but it's not the healthiest thing or the most permanent to take it off much faster.)
Lifestyle changes! Although accounting for your food is a good step in learning how to eat properly; portion control is a problem for me unless I'm counting calories.
Fair enough, as long as you are keeping track it could help motivate you.

Portions are REALLY SMALL compared to what everyone thinks they should be.
