Canon: Gene Rodenberry's Andromeda
Character: Trance Gemini
Timeline: Season 2, literally just before episode 18 starts.
Personality: In the beginning of Andromeda, Trance was the type that had been bubbly with a side of trouble-making and a dash of mystery peppered about everything. After going through a timeline where her attempt to make a better future went very, very wrong, a more direct and almost intimidating Trance literally took her place. It felt like there was less room to have fun, and spending even more time and extreme measures of looking into probable futures for the right outcomes. Not that it stopped her from trying to enjoy herself occasionally, either with Harper or the other girls on the Andromeda, but it left less time to do so. Between constant battles and losing her friends, one by one or piece by piece, left her with the belief that it was best to take a realistic approach that had her looking at several outcomes at once. She's learned to make more ruthless decisions, where there are casualties, as long as those she knew and cared for survived. She's been hardened, made to be calculating in a big-picture yet also personal way far more than doing so on whim. It became more about her friends, and fixing things.
Still, some basics remained, despite the duties and mistakes that are on her shoulders. Aside from loving her friends, it's a fondness for all organic life in general, and the natural cycles they go through. There's the fun things that are done, like gambling and racing. There was alcohol, one of the few things she actually consumed, and most importantly, her friends. Save for the time in the hydroponics garden, the time spent with Beka and Rommie for their 'girl time,' and just helping out Harper with his projects had been some of the most valued.
Being in a new place, cut off from those friends and responsibilities is bound to have more innate natures surface. Lucifers can do some of the most contrived things for entertainment, just to make things interesting. Pretending ignorance, coming up and voicing ideas that may play as a bit of devil's advocate, and taking on projects to bring a bit of change into the city could very well be expected. Being in a place she can't leave, and away from the responsibilities she's bound to is going to most likely lead to the more social and pixie-ish side to come back out.
Background: For Trance's background, you have to go to the beginning. Where 'Heaven' was the only existence. From before the Big Bang, when all the energy and matter were bound very tightly into a singular point by what was called 'Love.' In time, boredom brought some of the energy and matter to want something different from Love. See, Love was order, harmony, singularity where it wanted nothing to change. The energy started to split between this faction, and the energy and matter that wanted something different. They called themselves something that translated best into 'Lightbringer,' or in Latin, 'Lucifer.' It became a war that the Lucifer's won, and they created the big bang; Heaven blowing up, though the action itself was actually rather quiet. It was the beginning to Life, and the end to boredom. As the Lucifers spread apart, they gathered matter and energy and matter around themselves and burned with excitement.
They became stars; suns for those that had matter revolving around their burning forms. It wasn't the end of the war, however. Love survived, and what happened was something it hated. See, Love was an obsessive type, that hated the chaos and change that this brought about. So it wanted things to go back to how it was. Which meant collapsing Existence, and restoring Heaven. Sadly, the Lucifers knew that Love was going to win after everything started to thrive. Not because the future could be seen, but because this exact thing has happened many, many times. It was a constant cycle, guaranteed from the Lucifers having created a fail-safe called the Engine of Creation to ensure that the Big Bang would still happen.
Until there was a time when Love didn't want the cycle to play out the way it should. In trying to force the End to come early, the Lucifers gave themselves another form. Avatars; their minds and spirits projected into fabricated bodies, which were connected to their home suns through the slipstream. It was the beginning of a plan to try and annihilate Love, and make sure the Universe never collapsed again. Now being both Lucifers and Avatars, they foresaw probabilities to force the Universe to go down the most desired path. Eventually, running through all the probabilities brought up six people that would become very important to what they considered the Perfect Possible Future. One where the Abyss was destroyed, and with Beka taking the Engine of Creation, kept the cycle of exploding, expanding, thriving and collapsing alive even without the opposing force. So Trance, the leader of one of the nebulae, was sent out to make sure that future happened. When the Commonwealth officially collapsed, Tarn Vedra disappeared from the slip stream and they lost their sun, Trance left to carry out the task. There was a problem, though. In the following events, Trance had grown to love the organic life of this Universe, and most especially, she cared too much for those six important people.
About 300 years later, a surviving ship from the Commonwealth was found by mercenaries. A hired ship, called the Eureka Maru that was captained by Beka Valentine. Aside from an engineer, Harper, and a Magog Wayist nicknamed Rev Bem, Trance had taken up a spot on the crew list that had recently freed up. This happened by 'chance,' after her predecessor Vex Pag had 'bought a farm' after a torn pressure suit and bad emergency seal. Not long after, a 'man' named Gerentex had hired the Eureka Maru to help find and salvage the Andromeda Ascendant. Something considered one of the most valued 'legends' that was trapped on the horizon of a black hole this entire time. It's due to 'luck' and a lot of hard work that the crew pull the ship far enough out that the time flow on the ship returned to normal and it was salvaging time. At least, that's how it was intended, until it turned out that they had an unexpected passenger on the ship, and the Andromeda didn't appreciate Harper trying to take control of her. Quickly, it became a 'game' of scatter, divide and conquer. Trance had one run-in with Dylan, which could be considered her victory, as she quickly dropped down the ladder between decks and lost the Captain. With the crew having regrouped, and starting to change their minds, Gerentex brings in mercenaries to finish up the job. Much to the crew's objection, it should be noted. To push them against the wall, Trance is shot point blank in the chest and left for dead, with the crew forced to do as Gerentex says. However, she didn't stay dead, and Dylan had met up with her. Working together with the crew and Captain, Gerentex and his mercenaries had been dealt with, and Andromeda's control was back where it belonged.
From here, when Dylan proposes his plan to restore the Commonwealth, Trance puts in a word for support. One good reason being used was that he had found her when everyone left her for dead. With this, and a bit more deliberation, the Eureka Maru's crew joined up with Dylan Hunt. From here, Trance had taken several positions; some of which were carried over from the ones that were on the Maru. One was that of a medical practitioner, having more experience and skill with the equipment available compared to everyone else. The other was to manage the environment and atmosphere, which included her favorite part of the ship. Which was taking care of the garden. Something that she had taken great care, which had been shown later as Beka warned Harper against using Trance's plants in experiments. Pointing out that the current 'victim' was named Walter. The final part was the scanner, navigating everyone's weapons when a battle came apart. While it wasn't a constant job, it certainly seemed to be with how many battles the ship would run in to.
A few episodes later, in Harper 2.0, we get a titbit more. Aside from treating to keep Harper's vitals under control, a little information is revealed about Trance. One song, or hymn, that Harper tries to sing to get her attention, or rile her up, brings about a warning for him to not do that again. Due to the information that Harper had, when he finally managed to get some control, he was persuaded to hide all of the information where no one would find it. There was only one part that he distinctly brought up in the episode, after looking at the tattoo of a sun on her shoulder blade. That he saw people dancing around the statue of a naked girl with a tail. Luckily, he didn't remember much, if anything concerning this information after the data was removed and transferred elsewhere. The next episode, where Dylan is imprisoned on charges from three centuries ago, Trance takes it upon herself to sneak off-board the Andromeda and start a rescue mission. Or, as Trance said it, stole Dylan back. Depending a bit on his memory, and far more on Trance's ability to 'make the right guess,' based on probabilities, they manage to break out, settle the situation and return to the Andromeda. Upon being asked to make a report, it read simply as "I looked for you, I found out where you were, I traveled to where you were, and I got you out."
In another episode, Trance and Harper, while aboard the Eureka Maru, are taken hostage by Gerentex. Though he is momentarily surprised by Trance no longer being dead, both she and Harper are hooked up to the same shock device so that they help in finding a valuable treasure. It is in this time that, occasionally, Trance attacks him psychologically about his methods and how it won't help him get what he really wants. Something that may work for a moment, but fail soon after. It isn't until later, after much fighting between Gerentex and Harper, and the danger of all the traps in an asteroid that held the treasure, that Trance really snaps. Pulling out a gun on both of them, and threatening to kill both if they don't start behaving. After pointing out that she can get away with it, because she's the cute one, it's the act of how she'd convince the crew that really gets them to work together. In the end, it's Harper and Trance who keep the treasure, a journal of all the slip stream routes, with Trance giving Gerentex a plant that is considered one of the best for creating oxygen. Something that was also very valuable, and would prove to be a more honest way of getting his goal of a place to spawn and raise a family.
It's aside these times, where there are other points that show the kind of life Trance had on the Andromeda Ascendant. The training with Tyr that could seem ridiculous, but apparently work in her favour. Picking and playing with Harper, down to taking bets. The Girl-Time with Rommie and Beka over on the Maru when they want a moment to themselves. Going down planet-side for the casinos or joining in festivities to learn the cultures of planets. All the while enjoying some kind of alcohol, at that. It's after Harper had tripped a hidden personality of Andromeda's, meant for a past secret mission, that things started to spiral out of control somewhat. Being trapped and forced to navigate the slipstream, which has proven to be one of the worst things Trance could do, it's up to her to try to get through to the AI while Magog overrun the rest of the ship. Which had gotten to the point that a portion of the crew was injured, or broken in Rommie's case, and Tyr and Harper had been abducted. It isn't until after the personality is restored to normal that they were even able to rescue the two and cripple the world ship, before finally beginning repairs on the Andromeda. Unfortunately, this left Harper with a 'nest' of Magog eggs (and later larvae) and Rev Bem struggling with his magog nature that was recently embrace to save his friends, and his devotion to The Way.
Of course, this encounter with the World Ship had only proved as additional motivation in getting the Commonwealth restored again. What was needed to officially start the government back up was the signatures of 50 separately-governed planets. Which led to the search of enough world leaders that would agree to the cause, trying to stay ahead of the World Ship in it's repairs, and keep the crew together in one piece. Not that it was the easiest road, as they had attracted the attention of the Magog's leader, and god, the Spirit of the Abyss, along with his agents. Ones that continued to do their best to stop the Commonwealth from being created, and destroy everyone on, and including, the Andromeda. There were even points when the Agents appealed to Harper's desire to get rid of the Magog larvae in his gut for him to do what they wanted. Of course, that was turned over, giving the crew a chance to learn and understand more about the Abyss, at the cost of more than half of the larvae remaining in Harper's stomach.
A few episodes later, with the help of a friend, Harper builds a Teseract Machine to remove the larvae that are close to killing him. However, this causes a disturbance in time, causing 'ripples' that make the ship unstable. Every doorway, stairwell, and part where the corridors cross had the risk of going in to a different point of time and/or space. Leading Beka to meet a future version of herself, which was almost as much machine as it was human, and a future version of Trance showing up in time to save the original Beka. Both Trances cross paths, revealing that the 'new' Trance was from a future where things went 'very wrong,' and what the original Trance had done wasn't enough. (Another scene, to keep Beka from doing something incredibly stupid, had Trance hitting Beka with the truth of what happened. That eventually everyone died save for them, with Trance treating Beka so many times over the undetermined amount of years, that she had to replace parts with machines, and even fix and replace those.) Exchanging goodbyes, and saying that she wasn't really leaving but changing, the purple Trance ran through one of the ripples. Now there was the older Trance, who was more direct, more prone to action when she was around, and open to Dylan with what she could do, and later, what she was. The following episodes, including one that was when the Andromeda crew were hosting an event that would decide the Triumvant for the Commonwealth, show Trance trying to make different decisions and telling Dylan what went wrong so that they don't end up with the same future that she came from.
Abilities/Additional Notes: Alive/Dead Y/Y - While a questionable state in the series, it's better clarified by linking the clues together. As Trance's body is fabricated, not born or created in the same way as other people's bodies, it has no life signs. Pulse, blood pressure, brain activity and bodily activities are essentially absent. When given a typically mortal blow, the consciousness is disconnected from the body, giving a dead appearance. When able to reconnect, the appearance of breathing returns with movement because it's all puppeted by the sun's consciousness. While this body makes disease, poison and inhospitable environments tolerable, it also makes it susceptible to things like sentient parasites that take over the body, and not the mind. (Things trying to possess by overwhelming the mind/brain first would have to try and overwhelm Trance's consciousness.) Death - While unexplored in the series, I am setting situations where death can occur. Normally it'd be limited to something like the sun being destroyed, and things that can destroy a star. In this case, I'll be adding that the body will have to be mutilated/destroyed to the point that it can no longer be functional. She'll recover from typical death blows, like getting shot, stabbed, shocked or given something like a lethal injection used in executions, but if the form is ruined to the point that it can't be used, it will go through death consequences placed in the game.
Future Improbable - Trance doesn't necessarily see the future, so much as probable outcomes. Whether spending an instant or hours, she can look at a point in time and see the outcome of various decisions that can be made then. It's ranged from small things that don't require much effort, like coin tosses and games of chance, to deciding the right action to have everyone on the Andromeda survive a major battle. The further into the probable futures that Trance looks at, the less and less reliable they can be. Limitation in Adstringendum - As it revolves around time, which can be fickle, the use of this ability is limited to smaller and more immediate decisions. Things that don't affect the mishmash world on a large scale. You can essentially say that she has a very, very good streak of luck.
Solar Powered - Trance is able to change the form of her body to that of a small model of her sun. The size can vary, from being able to fit in a bathroom, to encompassing a ship. This form is dangerous to interact directly with, having incinerated people that have gotten too close, and some may react to the raw energy released. Limitation in Adstringendum - Usually this form is taken for the purpose of the next noted ability. In this case, the size of the form (thus influence) is limited to that of a garage at most. The properties would be similar to fire, though it is still considered sunlight. Most likely, this ability won't come into use, but is still something to be noted on the off-chance.
Behold the Expanding Universe Lucifers have been part of the cycle of creation and destruction for countless Big Bangs. Just as suns and stars can bring life, they've destroyed it as well. Avatars have destroyed and created, or recreated, specific things as well. Some simple things could be a dust that would disrupt some kinds of magnetic locks on bars, to keep people in place. In a point after the time Trance is taken, when there was little other choice she had destroyed the Andromeda Ascendant, along with it's crew, and recreated it in a place of safety within the universe. Limitation in Adstringendum - Naturally, given the mix of Universes and worlds, this is another ability nerfed. Destruction and most of the Creation, as it could be called, is going to be locked out. At most, she'll be able to do the tiniest things, like the dust mentioned. Things that don't require her going into her solar form to accomplish.
Gardener and Medic - On the Andromeda, Trance had several positions due to the small crew on such a large warship. Aside from knowing how to control and manage the environmental and life support systems on the ship. Though it's due to her insight towards creation and how living creatures generally work, she ended up being relied on as a xenobiologist, as either the physician on board or managing the hydroponics garden. It's natural for her to be able to take care of living things, especially plants. Between this and her ability to see probabilities based off of decisions, she has gained a lot of medical experience on the Andromeda with the right tools present. Even without the tools, she's been shown to at least manage to take some of the pain away- best assumed to be thermal therapy to the affected areas. While in the hydroponics garden, everything seemed to flourish as they grew under her care. Which was probably because it was the most authentic experience the had with actual sunlight. She basically has an affinity for taking care of living things.
Space Age Warrior - Due to being from a futuristic sci-fi series, despite not being an engineer Trance is familiar with advanced technology. She's managed communications, navigation systems and has programmed nanomachines for specific medical purposes. She won't know how to make neat future toys, but she won't have trouble understanding most technology that comes up in the game. Thanks to Tyr in season 1, Trance had started official combat training. While unorthodox, the method she chose to use had been effective for close quarters combat. As the years and battles passed, through her original timeline, her firearms and melee skills increased to the point where she's handling a Force Lance, blaster, and a pair of sharpened sai with high proficiency. The
force lance, which was on her person upon showing up in Adstring, is something that requires charging after some length of time. Abilities like effectors, stun pulse and plasma grenades are disabled in Adstring. (If requiring further limiting, auto-fire could also be disabled, and the time it'd take to charge the force lance will be about two days for a full charge.)
Meet the Spy - More accurately, meet the gambler, thief, and spy. Before having even met up with Beka Valentine and joining her crew, Trance had been taking jobs to acquire things for her clients. She'd never say that she was a thief, but she has countless amounts of thefts under her belt along with acts of espionage. Between her ability mentioned in Future Improbable, and an ability to act sweet and innocent (only amplified by her innocence/ignorance of certain customs and phrases,) she hasn't come across a failed mission that required any of the skill before. Later, this has been adapted into infiltration tactics in the series.
Sample Journal Post: [Video]
[The PCD turns on, at first having nothing but some grass and trees on screen. The only activity at first is the sounds of rustling and steps before a woman's voice starts calling out.]
This place doesn't match the coordinates set. ... Dylan?
[The camera moves forward a bit before rocking back. After a slightly high pitched charging noice and curious sounding 'hm?,' it's obvious that someone's picking the PCD up from behind, getting a glimpse of a boot before focusing on something that looks both bronze and leathery. It stays like that for a few seconds before it finally pans on the newcomer. Someone... Definitely not human, if the skin and ears were any indicator. Of course, it could be someone from a sci-fi convention. She's definitely dressed for colder weather... At least she has a friendly expression up as the device gets turned right side up.]
Did someone lose this? Hello? I'm not sure if this is connected on a network, but it seems to have been on...
[She pauses, contemplating something for a few seconds. A moment in all of that, she glances to the side and up to the sky to the suns.]
This place seems very strange... Ah! I just found the archive of previous logs. Quite an active place.
Sample RP: [Note: A different view, leading into and including the above sample.]
Something wasn't right. Many somethings, in fact, as nothing matched up to the planet that they were supposed to be landing on. Her, Dylan and Rommie were going to look into the attack on a Calderan ship on Ral Parthea; a nature reserve planet. While the climate was abundant in flora, it wasn't in the season to be this warm. Even more, the trees and turf seemed... wrong. They were closer to the classifications that were more appropriate to ancient Earth, which wasn't impossible. Just very unlikely. "This place doesn't match the coordinates set."
Where were Dylan and Rommie? "Dylan?"
Everything was wrong. Even more, it felt wrong, disjointed. There was a disconnected sense with herself, like something caused a short inside. They had to get back to the Andromeda. Walking past a few more trees, after hearing a something in the distance and her foot knocking into what felt like a rock, Trance pulled the force lance out of it's holster. Starting a charge and holding it at the ready, her eyes scanned the area around before looking down to what she sorta-kicked. Raising an eyebrow, more in curiosity than confusion, she crouched down to pick the device up. It looked to be an out of date communicator- Like the ones with video functions. Looking at the dimensions she muttered, "Did someone lose this?" while realizing that it did, in fact, have video capabilities. One that was currently in use, though for how long... "Hello? I'm not sure if this is connected on a network, but it seems to have been on..."
Looking around, finally standing to full height again, Trance decided to take in more of the details. Getting past some of the shrubbery and looking around, some structure could be seen. Two suns weren't uncommon, though it only confirmed something that was already understood. Odds being that this was the furthest thing from a nature reserve was extremely high. Still, the greenery in the area wasn't usually seen on planets with two suns, compared to more suitable species of the proaceae family. "This place seems very strange..." Still, best to make sure the system of the device wasn't too different. "Ah!" Success, with logs showing up. "I just found the archive of previous logs. Quite an active place."
Still, it wasn't the time to look through the videos and audio. Snooping through a huge group of strangers' histories wasn't really the most pertinent thing to do in a world where nothing seemed to be what it should.
