Sharing something from my food blog...

My partner and I keep a food blog over on Wordpress. She's a vegetarian, I tend towards a more flexitarian diet. You can find us at Free Range Tofu.

Here's an entry I posted last winter on a chili I crock-potted. You can either follow the link or just keep reading:

I love chili. I mean, love it. Cold fall Sundays - hell, cold Sundays anytime - make ( Read more... )

Oh man, I LOVE chili too... but I didn't like it before I was vegan! None of my recipes (I use about 4 different ones!) are crockpot recipes though... maybe I'll try to convert them! (Shouldn't be hard, especially starting with canned beans...)

I like Morningstar Farms products; their "sausage" patties are great. But there are a lot of additives in MF stuff. You might like a product called Quorn Grounds. They don't have a lot of taste on their own (and the MF do, so that might be a factor), but the "bite" of the Quorn Grounds is perfect, and they are almost all protein and very little else.

I don't work for Quorn, or have any connection with it. I'm just a satisfied consumer.

Oops. I should say that Quorn has egg whites in it.

We both eat eggs, so no worries there...but thanks for the heads up, as I do cook for people who don't eat eggs sometimes.

I've been wanting to try the Quorn products. We try to sample as many different meat analogs as we can -- we are currently loving Gardein. Quorn is harder to find in the grocery stores in my neighborhood, and the selection tends to be limited. (We don't have a Central Market/WF/Sprouts/Trader Joes in my suburb.) Next time I make a run to a place with a larger selection, I'll have to pick up some of the Grounds to try.

Thanks for the tip!

The one I tried that went so disastrously bad wasn't a crock recipe, and I did it in a pot on the stove...which might have been the problem. I've made good chili on the stove before, of course, but this recipe might have benefited from several hours in the crock. It was just very thin, and the flavors did not meld, in spite of following the recipe closely. (Perhaps that was the mistake -- chili should be a dump and cook endeavor, really ;p) I'd never had chili not turn out, at least not on such an epic scale, before. (Past batches that were meh could be remedied with more spices, extra salsa, or whatever. Not this stuff.)
