It may be gross, but given that a respectable number of them ended up being martyred by cannibals, it's appropriate. In an inappropriate sort of way.

Random fact: Today may be Febuary 14, but it's not actually St. Valentine's Day according to your index o' messy deaths. Febuary 14th, however, was around the time of Lupercalia, a Roman festival that could arguably be described as a less subtle, less commercialized version of Valentine's Day.
