a useful search function.

hey fancy mods!

bobbymcr helped me hack this code to be able to search not only one community but also give the option of searching whichever combination of communities you want to search!!! (although it lost the ability to search "everywhere" but that shows up when you go to the results page anyway, so it's a moot point.)

This is awesome!! That other search engine never worked well for me. I think it should be moved to the top of the VP info page!

When you select "selected vegan communities," what communities does it search? I just did a couple of test searches on the VP one and it pulled VP post and vegancooking posts. Should veganism be added?

the one i made for vegancooking (the one that is featured here) searches vegancooking, cheapvegan, easyvegan, veganrecipes, vegan_candy, veganfoodpics, vegantestkitchn, veganreadymade, veganpeople, veganism, dailyvegan

but i'm totally open to changing the communities that are searched.
(veganpeoples' "selected vegan communities" are veganpeople, veganism, vegancooking, vegan_talk, vegan_people, starting_vegan. i suppose i should take vegan_people out of the mix, since there are no new entries... this search tool only archives newly made entries, and doesn't archive older entries that were made before it "discovers certain journals" (most of the vegan communities were discovered about a month ago)

the thing with veganpeople's page is that i had to change it to S2 to support tags. :-( it doesn't look as pretty as it used to, and i don't have enough knowledge with html to be able to figure it out on my own.

That's great! That may more people see it and hopefully USE it!

I think that looks like a nice list of veg communities. I'm sure we can add others as they occur to us.

This code looks awesome! If I manage to make it work I am definitely pimping it out to my friends who have comms which really need to have search-boxes like this! Thanks for sharing and cracking. :-D

P.S. Do you think the whole box could possibly be "downsized" to fit in a sidebar? That would be double awesome... I'll try it myself, but knowing lj and it's wonky CSS I'm not sure how to even stick it into a sidebar of a layout not completely handmade by someone else who already knows all about these things...

i don't think so, but let's test it out anyway. (i changed table width to 200 and "input type="text" name="q" size="15"" to size 5)

ok. i just experimented.

it appears the width of the drop down box is linked to the width of the names of your selections.

the one i have at the bottom of the post is 200 for the box width and 24 for the text width.

so it appears you can in fact make it skinnier.

good luck! (and great idea!)

Thanks for so promptly trying this out - it's great that it might actually work from this end of things! I still dunno how/where to best stick it on a regular sidebar, but at least now I have good motivation to keep on trying. :-)
