Very Sad Vegan

Jun 03, 2007 19:34

So I'm seeing a nutritionist, and basically she wants me to eat more protein -- more soy protein, that is. When we worked through a mealplan, I only just realized how MUCH soy would be in my diet. In the milk at breakfast, some marinated at lunchtime in a salad, some soy cheese on rice crisps for a snack...yes. In my opinion, way too much n(there were alternatives of course, but a lot of them involved soy in some form or another). I'm just not comfortable eating that much of something, let alone something controversial.

I haven't been getting my period ever since going vegan and my nutritionist feels that is because I am not getting enough "high quality" protein. I eat a lot of beans. I'm really doing my best. I'm trying to get the right amounts of B12 and iron, but I just don't feel that great in general. I know a lot of you guys on here have been vegan for a while and probably hate to hear this kind of thing from a newcomer. I'd really, really love not to drop it, but I often feel unwell and I am being VERY stringent about what I put in my mouth -- everything is very "nutrient dense" so I am not sure what the issue is. I don't feel as though I'm not getting enough protein, and I don't think soy is the answer.

Any support? Advice?
