What's the deal with people who feel they "need" to eat meat?

Many people admit they can't give up eating meat because it's too deeply ingrained a habit, and as long as meat and fish are sold, they'll gladly partake. Some even like to catch and kill their own meat and fish, and cite the "primal" feeling they get from the juicy deliciousness of it.

More than ever, I hear that there's no nutrient, not even ( Read more... )

Yeah, but:

1) Nobody ever uses them; how do we add the ones we need?

There isn't much activity here lately, so finding recent posts is pretty easy. Members are able to tag their own posts, and if there isn't a tag in the expansive list that exists that one might want to use, maintainers are happy to add them as needed. There were problems with spamming of tags in the past, so we are reluctant to allow members to add new ones.

SC may not log in to LJ as often as she once did, but I am around every day and I am personal friends with her so if she needs to be contacted, I am able to do it.

What I'm saying is the tags may be logical on some level, but they're not usable. Can you relay that to her?

God, I hear this so often from omnivores that it makes me sick. There is absolutely nothing that one can't get from plants, you are right. As a marathon runner, I can attest that it is completely easy to get all necessary nutrients from plant sources alone.

I think it is a combination of ignorance (to some extent, they just haven't bothered to learn more about plant based nutrition and how comprehensive it can in fact be), making excuses (they really don't want to give up something that they think tastes good, so they use nutrition as a convenient excuse) and addiction (to the taste of meat)... and since most people have a lifestyle these days where there's a huge disconnect between farm and table, many of those who would otherwise be swayed by the animal cruelty issue remain ignorant to that too, or at least sheltered from it enough that they can keep from letting it overcome their addiction to the flavor of meat.
