...hustler

So the SailorHustler was sent to pasture about two months ago. Since then, I have shifted to predominantly using my bicycle for transportation. I have historically driven so little here that the cost of an occasional bus fare, a couple ZipCar uses, a couple late night taxis, and gassing up Deni's Jeep when I borrowed it for a couple days to run ( Read more... )

Since it does not seem that you particularly care about gas mileage, there are lots of used SUV's that would flip the bill.

Nissan XTerra (under $7000)

Toyota Rav4

Honda CRV

mid to late 90's - Toyota 4Runner with the V6 engine, not the 8. These have leather seats as well, some even have heated seats.

Oh, some off-white guy might be willing to sell you his subaru

Yea, since I do such little driving gas mileage is really not a concern. The SUV thing definitely fits the cargo requirement and could make for a comfortable road trip car. I have definitely checked out the Rav4 and CRV in the past. I have not looked at the XTerra though. I think I need to get a temporary membership to the ConsumerReports website so I can narrow my search by cars that are not crap.

Nah. I did that in high school.

Besides... I already own a 6.5hp lawn mower. I don't need a car to get jealous.

Kim's Windstar, as I recall was just over $6K (basically a cash sale from the seller's perspective, but with her taking a business loan through our bank.) I don't remember the year of the vehicle, though. I think you will probably find a better deal on a minivan than an SUV simply due to the soccer-mom utilitarian nature of the van versus the blingability of most SUVs. Nobody's going to get spinnerz for their minivan, but even the crappiest SUV can be enhanced by them; ergo the SUVs are going to be the highest in demand and will command the highest prices. Although, with gas prices the way they are, who knows?

Of course, now that I've said that stuff about spinnerz, you're going to get a minivan and outfit it with some.

"Nobody's going to get spinnerz for their minivan.."
Ha. You know better than to put it past me.

I am also a fan of the minivan still. The one I had just drove like a sled without shocks. I think you are right that they are standarly cheaper than any run of the mill SUV type thingy. I know CRVs go for much more than a Windstar of the same year and mileage.

I just may lean that way. Besides, it might give me a chance to add camo spinnas.

i bought my saturn wagon used for $1300 in New Hampshire. That was, what... 3 years ago? it has over 200,000 miles on it and has gone all over the country. for a little more you could probably get a better saturn that would last longer.

i'm really a big fan of the saturns.

Nice. I would like to think I could find something in the price range. Need to save my cash for other essentials like plane tickets to China.

i would definitely check out saturns on craigslist or autotrader or whatever there is along those lines. i know it's different in the tiny town where i got my car in NH, but even at the saturn dealership (where i purchased my previous saturn) they had cars for less than 8k that were in superb condition.

plus i've had to do very little maintenance and parts seem to be pretty reasonably priced when i have had to replace things.
