The Australian government thinks that hunting and  trading critically endangered animals is ok:

I do find it interesting that we (as a broader Australian culture) are so violently against the idea of Japan hunting down and killing non-endangered whales (because it's cool to like whales) but we don't give a rat's ass about actually endangered tuna.

This has been written about lots and lots by various people who write better than me and when I'm not about to go to sleep I'll send you some links. But it boils down to "people that are cute" versus "people we can gain some benefit from abusing".

Spent some of this weekend in the company of some lovely cows too. Who are cute and lovely individuals regardless of what the mainstream think.
