Please see below the cut about a specific emergency appeal for Hugletts Wood Farm Animal Sanctuary in East Sussex. Hugletts Wood is a primarily a sanctuary for cow but many sheep and birds (geese, chickens, ducks etc) also live there. Further information about the amazing work they do can be found on their facebook page:

--Appeal by Jane Jackson, close friend and volunteer of Hugletts Wood Farm Animal Sanctuary, East Sussex, UK:--------------------

Hugletts Wood Farm Animal Sanctuary

On behalf of Wenda and Matt I would like to thank everyone for their generosity in supporting Hugletts in the past.

We have already booked stalls at various events throughout the year and our fun Open Day (plenty of vegan food available) is set for May 21st but an occurrence before Christmas has left Hugletts in a precarious situation. “Betsy” their trusty old David Brown 995 tractor that at the age of 35 had served Hugletts well for 10 years has despite careful maintenance finally given up the ghost. The cost of repair is way beyond the cost of a used replacement tractor and it is with the thought of purchasing another second hand tractor I appeal for your help.

A tractor has been offered to them with every capability that Betsy offered, at a price of £3250. The vendor will hold it for three weeks before selling it on the open market thus giving us a chance to raise funds.

Betsy is a multi-tasking machine and because of this they are completely dependent on her. In fact the loss affects the running of the sanctuary very badly. Betsy was used for all heavy lifting and so much more !

Every day Wenda and Matt have to manhandle 4 huge bales of wrapped silage to the cows, which weigh 500kgs a piece, as well as the 3 round bales of bedding straw. Trying to roll straw in wet muddy conditions is impossible! The tractor was a work horse and time saver. As a consequence another 4 hours a day is added to the work load; this time used to be spent caring for the cows and earning money for their feed. Wenda has long-standing back problems so it is only a matter of time before the additional strain takes its toll.

Around this time of year, they would also be using Betsy to start preparing the fields for Spring “turn out,” to be sure of plenty of lush long grass waiting. Nutrients need spreading across the fields soon. In addition to this, the winter work of moving fallen trees in the woods, which are cut up for logs and used for woodland products and charcoal, (all of which help to bring in money) should be taking place.

The tractor was the compost turner too, rotating the soiled bedding and dung so that it breaks down into saleable compost.

Hugletts is almost at a standstill !

Despite the fact we have gone two years without the need of asking for help, with  the best will in the world, Wenda and Matt’s current finances will not stretch to replacing Betsy. The spiralling cost of feed this winter, (which has seen the price quadruple), is using up everything they can earn. They have no control over rising prices. An average feed bill per week now exceeds £1200.

Betsy’s loss to the sanctuary is immeasurable.

If you can help with a donation, no matter how small, to help replace Betsy it will be most gratefully received.

Thank you !
