May diversions

Films: Eight this month!
Deception: Poor thriller with Hugh Jackman and Ewan MacGregor.
Sleuth (2007): Remake of a "classic", should be a blistering two-hander, but the house is the best thing in it.
Cloverfield: Neat concept, but vomit-inducing camerawork and by-the-numbers Godzilla-lite plot.
Wolverine: Disappointing with laughable CGI, but ( Read more... )

The show also implies that this type of body language is inherent, fixed and universal, which is pretty much utter bollocks

I think Lie to Me is pretty rubbish, so I hate to do so, but I have to defend it on this part. The bloke whose career the show is based on/inspired by did some research where he went to New Guinea in the '60s to see if people who had no contact with or knowledge of the rest of the world had the same expressions, and he found that universal expressions are indeed the case. You can see his conclusions of what the base emotions are here.

Of course, if you think he's talking bollocks... :)

Ekman found that some expressions are universal - expressions of gross emotions such as fear, surprise and disgust. Lie To Me goes far, far further than that, making categorical statements about the universality of of tiniest flickers of mild, complex or subtle emotions. And that is pretty much bollocks.

Oh, did they? I must have stopped watching before they went that far. I rescind my previous comment and agree with the bollockery.

On other shows, I haven't tried watching The Mentalist yet, but the title makes me giggle every time. I thought they'd rename it if it ever came over here, but I see Five have proved me wrong.

Yeah, it's irritating, and they're still doing it. It's pleasant enough mindless brain candy, but I'm not sure whether we'll keep watching the whole season or not.

I also wondered if they'd rename The Mentalist or not... am much amused that they didn't :-)

I watched the last episode of ER out of... I'm not sure what. But it wasn't too bad, there were a lot of nice nods to the pilot, coming full circle type stuff. And after the documentary, it was remarkably un-mawkish which is a pretty big achievement for a show that turned us all off by becoming ridiculous and predictable.

In which case, I may seek it out :-)
