Summer

1). Garden is still puny but definitely living. Very green, flowers on most plants. 'Course most people we know who are also gardening have already starting harvesting, but whatever. This is our first garden from seed...we expected mass death, which so far hasn't happened. I consider that success ( Read more... )

Green is good. Flowering is also good. My tomato plants just started flowering again; I haven't harvested anything but I have high hopes for next week for the cherry tomato plant. Keep a watch for squirrels. I would have had some of the bigger tomatoes except that every single one of the fruit at or near ground level (ie the first fruit) had exactly one bite taken from it by a stupid squirrel; and then the bitten area started to rot. So maybe encourage Tristan to do some patrolling :)

How are your squash? Also, have you had luck with watermelon? I think maybe we're not neglecting ours enough...

So far, no squirrels. Which is a good thing, because Tristan is useless for chasing off anything smaller than a cat. He doesn't even register rabbits as something to pursue.

The squash is getting along, not much in the way of fruit setting but it's been hot... I grew watermelon once at mom & dads, a few years ago. I had no luck; the season was just too short and come first frost the melons had still not ripened. They like a long, hot season and some humidity. From growing pumpkins (same family) the only advice I can give is to water consistently, only around the base of the plant and avoid getting water on the leaves. Also, they like loamy, rich, well-drained soil and need regular fertilizing. There's more info here. The people I know that grow it successfully in this area all start the seeds inside and do what they can to get the plants as much growing time as usual. The average days to maturity is 80-90, which is pushing it around here.

No kidding, Erin's grown watermelon off her back patio...in the gravel of the driveway. They get huge and ripen by mid-August. It's ridiculous. Makes me feel very inferior.

Green is definitely good! I've lost a few things in this deadly evil heat. Crispy leaves are no fun!

And another ditto on the hopeful get-together. I've been meaning to have everyone together in the garden for a while now. And since Gwen is baking... do I sense a "Cake or Death" thing here? ;)

Glad all is well. Been thinking of you. xoxo
