A critique group really helps! All of the short stories I've ever had published were workshopped at least once by my writing group. My group has been together since about 2009/2010 and we've all really grown at giving and receiving feedback. We've also grown to know each other very well - to know each other's tells. Everyone in my group who still actively writes (4 out of the 6) has won contests, been published, or received honorable mentions from literary journals in the past year. It takes a while to get a good flow and learn to work together, but once it starts to run like clockwork, one member's success starts to feel like the group's success - and you feed off each other's successes in a cooperative-competitive mindset. Anyway, I'm glad you found a group.
(I keep trying to return to Livejournal because I think it did help my writing and make me feel accountable when I was using it- so, hello again. I feel like I haven't been gone long, but it has probably been years.)
Hello again! I always seem to come back to LiveJournal, too. I don't know if it really helps my writing, but I like being able to look back and see how I've changed (or not) over time.
At any rate, I am very pleased with the writing group. I'm not pleased at my own performance. I seem to keep finding other things to do other than write. By the same token, I actually like the fact that I'm making progress (albeit slow) even though the muse isn't always with me.
We don't meet as much as we would like, lately. We used to meet every two weeks, but now it's more like once a month for workshopping. We are all good friends now (one of the girls in the group was recently a bridesmaid in my wedding), so we do see each other to hang out rather than just to workshop.
