Confirmed! Not like, insofar as everyone's been accounted for, but everyone who's been keeping in touch with family back in Japan says they live far south/west enough (apparently all inaka I'm told), or at least no one lives very close to the most seriously affected areas. Very promising :)

Thank you for the well wishes!

Thank you. My parents returned home after the weekend and I guess have been in an elaborate phone tag game with the rest of our stateside family, finding out about the clan back on the island. Apparently everyone lives far enough away from the seriously affected areas, so I think we're good :D

It's incredibly daunting to watch that footage. Water seems so innocent and safe (especially with that little detail of us needing it to live), and then something like this happens to remind us how powerful and dangerous water can be. From the distance of the helicopter, the flowing water almost seemed slow and peaceful, until I got a good look of the cars and pieces of homes flowing away in the torrents. I can't imagine what rebuilding will be like for everyone there, but Japan is definitely a resilient country and I don't doubt that they are up for the challenge.

I hope all of your family is okay and that you hear from all of your f-listers who are out that way. I think I've seen a post from everyone, although there's one person who was suppose to be traveling there and don't recall when or where she was going. Hopefully I'll hear from her soon.

Right? The first videos released by the BBC showing the water moving across what looked like farmland looked so.. sedate and languid, and then there was this really surreal first-person footage that caught the water flow speeding up and moving gradually more and more things, until buildings were shifting and crumbling. Hard to imagine the people whose livelihoods will more than likely have to rebuilt from the ground up D: (God I hope they had good insurance.) It is some comfort that at the very least, all their engineering advancements and preparation prevented the quake aftermath from being what could certainly have been much, much worse.

As for the family, after the weekend my parents just finished what I can only imagine was an elaborate game of phone tag with all the stateside family members that stayed in touch with the folks back in Japan, and fortunately, it sounds like everyone is far enough inland in southern/western rural areas to be safe from the worst of it :) So that's a relief!

Thank you for the well-wishes. And confirmation! With the weekend over, my parents just finished what I can only imagine was an elaborate game of phone tag with all the stateside family members that stayed in touch with the folks back in Japan. Apparently, everyone pretty much lives in southern/western rural areas to be safe from the worst of it :) So that's a relief!
